By driving waveforms to respective display electrodes, the reset operation is performed to only one of odd-numbered and even-numbered display lines according to interlace driving of adjacent even-numbered and odd-numbered display lines. A pair of display electrodes of the other of the even-numbered and odd-numbered display lines being a non-objective of the reset operation, potential difference thereof is set to be 0 or smaller than a discharge starting voltage. In an odd-numbered field, the even-numbered display line is reset, and in an even-numbered field, the odd-numbered display line is reset.

A first row group of electrodes are dividedinto a plurality of first sub-groups, and a second row group of row electrodes are divided into a plurality of second sub-groups. During a first subfield of a first group of subfields, non-light emitting cells are selected from light emitting cells of a first sub-groups and light emitting cells of a second sub-groups are sustain-discharged during a first period. In addition, during the first subfield, the non-light emitting cells are selected from the second sub-group, and the light emitting cells of a first sub-group are sustain-discharged during a second period. With such an operation, a length of one subfield can be reduced because another row group is sustain-discharged while one row group is being selected as the non-emitting cells.

A light absorbing layer is formed in a portion of the reset and address discharge cell opposing the display surface. According to another aspect, the unit light emission region in the display panel comprises a first discharge cell and a second discharge cell comprising a light absorbing layer. A sustain discharge for emitting light for displaying an image is produced in the first discharge cell, while a variety of control discharges causing light emission not associated with a displayed image are produced in the second discharge cell. The object of the invention is to provide a method for driving a plasma display panel that provides an improved expression of levels of halftone as well as an improved display quality. In N sub-fields constituting a display period of one field, when a pixel data writing step for setting discharge cells to either one of non-light-emitting cells or light-emitting cells in response to pixel data and a light-emission sustaining step for allowing only the aforementioned light-emitting cells to emit light only during a light-emission period corresponding to weights assigned to the sub-fields respectively are executed, the light-emission period in the light-emission sustaining step of the respective sub-fields is changed field by field or frame by frame. According to another aspect, the invention allows for carrying out selectively a first drive pattern or a second drive pattern.
