    摘要: A servo track has identical servo pattern frames including two pairs of parallel magnetic transitions, the transitions of each pair spaced apart an equal distance, the transitions of the first pair at an azimuth angle to the longitudinal axis of the tape, the transitions of the second pair at an opposite azimuth angle. A servo channel receives signals at first times corresponding to when a servo read head detects the first and second transitions of the first pair of parallel transitions of a servo pattern frame, and second times corresponding to when the servo read head detects the first and second transitions of the second pair of parallel transitions. The servo channel determines a relative lateral movement and velocity between the tape and the tape head based on the azimuth angle and the ratio of the difference of the first and the difference of the second times.

    摘要: A thin film magnetic recording head is fabricated by forming a substrate from opposing ferrite blocks which have a ceramic member bonded between them. This structure is then diced to form a plurality of columns, wherein each column has a ferrite/ceramic combination. Each column represents a single channel in the completed head. A block of ceramic is then cut to match the columned structure and the two are bonded together. The bonded structure is then cut or ground until a head is formed, having ceramic disposed between each channel. A ferrite back-gap is then added to each channel, minimizing the reluctance of the flux path. The thin film is patterned on the head to optimize various channel configurations.

    摘要: A tape drive apparatus has at least one rotary head for reading/writing a track. The track has a number of fragments and each fragment has an identifier. The tape drive apparatus has a position indicator apparatus for providing a signal that indicates a rotational position of the head. The combination of the signal and the identifier unequivocally identifies a fragment within the fragments of a track. This has the advantage that non-unique identifiers can be used for the fragments of a track.

    摘要: A recording format discriminating apparatus for use on a video tape recorder capable of reproducing a signal recorded on a recording medium in a digital recording format or an analog recording format by one and same head rotary system or a plurality of head rotary systems dedicated to analog recording and digital recording respectively. The apparatus comprises: an amplifier, having a capability of automatically controlling a gain of a signal reproduced by one of the head rotary systems, for amplifying the signal to a predetermined level; a first band extracting circuit for extracting a particular narrow frequency band from the amplified signal; a first comparator and detector for detecting by amplification an output of the first band extracting circuit and comparing the detected output with a first reference value; a second comparator and detector for integrating and holding the comparison result output of the first comparator and detector and then comparing the integrated output with a second reference value; and a recording format discriminating circuit for discriminating the recording format of the signal recorded on the recording medium from the comparison result output of the second comparator and detector.

    摘要: The control software and hardware in the tape drive control unit creates and manages a header segment at the beginning of the magnetic tape. This header is interposed between a leader portion of the magnetic tape on the 3480-type cartridge and the remainder of the magnetic tape contained therein. This header segment contains two sections, a first of which is a data record directory that is used by the control unit to denote the location of each data record written on to the magnetic tape as well as administrative information associated with the data record. The second section of the header is an administrative information section that contains data relating to the magnetic tape itself. The stream of data records is divided into data segments, a plurality of which comprise a single helical scan track. The helical scan tracks are formed into scan groups and written on the magnetic tape. At least one longitudinal track is written on the magnetic tape coextensive with the helical scan groups to provide data to enable the tape drive to quickly locate data records recorded on the magnetic tape.
