The center axes of the outer electron beam passage holes in the first type of focus electrode forming the lens for correcting the field curvature are deviated on a horizontal plane from the center axes of the outer electron beam passage holes in the second type of focus electrode. The electrostatic quadruple lens produces dissimilar intensities for the outer electron beams and for the center electron beam. Therefore, the outer electron beam passage holes work to deflect the outer electron beams toward the center electron beam with an increase in the deflecting amount of the electron beams, and a favorable resolution is obtained on the whole screen of the cathode-ray tube.

A color cathode ray tube includes an in-line electron gun having a main lens with recessed apertures. The main lens is formed by two electrodes. These electrodes have outer edges and recessed apertures which allow passage of three in-line electron beams and which are arranged at a distance d1 and d2, respectively, from the outer edges. The outermost apertures are asymmetric. The difference d1-d2 and the asymmetry of the outermost apertures is such that both the beam displacement and the core haze asymmetry are minimal.

The three beam-passing holes are aligned in line. The two reference holes are positioned opposite to each other with respect to a middle beam-passing hole in the three beams-passing holes. The two reference holes are of different shapes. One of the two reference holes is a round hole and the other is an elongated hole. The elongated hole is formed by elongating a hole having a center located at a position opposite to that of the round hole toward the middle beam-passing hole. The elongated hole may be defined by combining a small-diameter hole, a large-diameter hole, and two lines tangent to the small-diameter hole and the large-diameter hole. The large-diameter hole is closer to the middle beam-passing hole than the small-diameter hole.

The system includes electrostatic field controlling electrodes in the anode and the second focusing electrode disposed opposite to the anode. Each of the electrostatic field controlling electrodes includes a center frame having a center electron beam pass-through hole, and outer frames extending from both sides of the center frame to form outer electron beam pass-through holes, wherein each one of the electrostatic field controlling electrodes is disposed in contact with the inside of the second focusing electrode and the anode, and a disposed depth from a rim portion of the second focusing electrode and the anode and thicknesses of the center frame and the outer frames in a travel direction of the electron beams are adjusted to minimize deflection aberrations of the three electron beams.

The effective aperture sizes of the final focusing and accelerating electrodes of an in-line electron gun structure for color cathode ray tubes are increased by elongating the apertures, expanding the outer edges of the side apertures, and surrounding the apertures with a peripheral raised rim which balances the asymmetry introduced into the apertures by enlargement. Partitions between the aperture may be radiused so their center height is lower than the height at the edges. The raised rim of the final accelerating electrode is generally higher than the raised rim of the focusing electrode.
