A user's set top box (STB), or other client, executes a shell and has an application program interface (API) by which certain features of the client can be controlled. The client is in communication with a walled garden proxy server (WGPS). The client sends a request to the WGPS to access a service provided by a site in the garden. The site sends the client a message containing code calling a function in the API. The WGPS traps the message from the site and looks up the site in a table to determine the access control list (ACL) for the site. The WGPS includes the ACL in the header of the hypertext transport protocol (HTTP) message to the client. The shell receives the message and extracts the ACL. If the code lacks permission, the shell stops execution.

The network architecture connects a high-speed private backbone to multiple network access points of the Internet, to a network operation center, to a back office system, and to multiple regional servers in regional data centers. Each of the regional servers connects to several caching servers in modified head-ends, which in turn connect via fiber optics to many neighborhood nodes. Finally, each node connects via coaxial cable to multiple end-user systems. A technique controls operation of a BRAS device. The technique involves extracting encapsulation information from a communications exchange between a CPE device and an external server device (e.g., a DHCP server). The communications exchange passes through the BRAS device and a DSLAM device. The technique further involves storing the encapsulation information in local memory of the BRAS device, and controlling a flow of a downstream communication passing through the BRAS device and the DSLAM device toward the CPE device based on the encapsulation information stored in the local memory of the BRAS device. Accordingly, the BRAS device is well suited for performing ATM overhead accounting as well as shaping and policing downstream traffic.

Whenever a DSLAM or a network node receives a Group Join message, it compares the MAC address of the originating STB to that of previous Join messages with their existing connections. If a match is found, then the DSLAM will initiate a GSQ for the group of the matching previous Join request. If there is not enough resources to satisfy the requirements of Group Join messages, then it may either be ignored, or queued for later processing, once the normal GSQ sequence is complete and resources are available. If the multicast group is no longer needed, the connection to the group is then terminated, as per normal GSQ processing. This frees up bandwidth for any new Join messages. The normal GSQ processing clears the trouble caused by the loss of Leave Message.

A digital subscriber line access multiplexing apparatus is disclosed in the invention, including subscriber side wide band service processing module, multiplex/demultiplex module, memory, network side processing module. Using the invention, the multiplexing apparatus could locate farther, and the distance of the signal transferring would be longer, satisfying the wide band service needs of the out-of-the-way area; and for the places where the optical fibers aren't laid or there is no free optical transmitting resources, there is no need to put large amount of manpower and material resources to lay the optical fiber or increase the optical transmission equipment, while satisfying the needs of wide band services. A method employing the digital subscriber line access multiplexing apparatus for signal transferring is also disclosed in this invention.
