The embodiments of the present invention provide a method and an apparatus for compensating nonlinear distortions in an intensity modulation-direct detection (IM-DD) system; wherein the method comprises: calculating, according to nonlinear coefficients and differences between values of an input signal at different time, nonlinear distortions of the input signal, so as to eliminate the nonlinearity distortions. By applying the method and the apparatus provided by the embodiments of the present invention, nonlinear cost of the IM-DD system can be effectively reduced, thereby improving the system capacity.

Provided is a link partner (LP) transmitter having a parallel selectable voltage gain taps. The method sends messages from a network-connected local device (LD) directing the LP to generally change the gain setting of either the pre-tap or the post-tap, as follows. The gain setting of selected tap is changed in the desired direction of modification and then the center tap gain settings is maximally increased until a limit signal is received. If a selected tap increment is desired, the center tap is initially decremented more steps than the desired change in the selected tap.

In described embodiments, an adaptive equalizer employed by a receiver in a communication channel, such as Fibre Channel, employs pattern recognition. When a repeating pattern, such as an IDLE or ARBFF pattern, is employed by a standard to, for example, maintain a communication link, an equalizer of the receiver might adaptively set its equalizer parameters based on characteristics of the signal energy of the repeating pattern rather than adaptively set its equalizer parameters based on characteristics of the signal energy of generally random user data carried on the link. Pattern recognition by the receiver allows for maintaining adaptive equalizer parameters at settings preferred for data detection of the typical random data, improving data detection performance of the receiver when the channel transitions from a preset or synchronization repeating pattern to a user random data pattern.

The method further includes detecting a transition in value between two successive data values and determining a sampled boundary value between the two successive data values. The iterative parameter estimation includes performing a first estimation of a first portion of a signal to obtain first parameters of the portion of the signal, wherein the signal contains no known data symbols. The first portion of the signal is demodulated using the first parameters to recover data symbols. The demodulated first portion of the signal is checked to confirm correct demodulation of the first portion of the signal. A second estimation of the first portion of the signal is performed using the recovered data symbols to obtain second parameters of the first portion of the signal. Then, a second portion of the signal is demodulated using the second parameters when the first portion of the signal is correctly demodulated.

Described embodiments provide for, in a receiver circuit employing a data latch, circuitry to adjust trim offset of the data latch to account for latch functional features (e.g., hysteresis and metastability) that may interact with trim of the latch. In accordance with the described embodiments, a trim procedure runs in a pre-selected directions of offset voltage ramp in order to average out the effect of hysteresis and metastability on the final trim offset choice. Different thresholds for accumulated slicer “0” and “1” discrimination of the circuitry to adjust trim offset allows for significant reduction in the number of trim runs, accelerating the slicers' trim process allowing for relatively quick determination of trim offset whenever the slicers are idle.

A controller and methods for adaptively adjusting a dispersion compensation circuit in a receiver of a communication link are disclosed. The controller receives a signal from an error detector coupled to the receiver. The controller includes a logic engine that provides configuration information to the dispersion compensation circuit. The configuration information defines a digital filter in response to at least one tap constraint and at least one coefficient constraint. In an example embodiment, the logic engine generates a measure of residual inter-symbol interference and a measure of a noise enhancement penalty and iteratively provides a set of adjusted coefficient values that when applied in the digital filter will result in an equalized receiver output signal that minimizes a mathematical combination of the measure of the residual inter-symbol interference and the measure of the noise enhancement penalty. Alternatively, for bandwidth limited channels, the controller provides a predetermined set of coefficient values.
