The method includes the providing of a heterodyne fiber-optic interferometer having a demodulator and an associated carrier frequency. The method also includes the determining of demodulator excessions. The detecting of the demodulator excessions and the determining of an appropriate correction factor is based on information from the instantaneous carrier frequency. The method also includes the introduction of the appropriate correction factor to the demodulator.

A communications signal is received through a propagation channel, down-converted in frequency and then converted into a digital signal. The samples of the digital signal are processed to estimate the information conveyed by the communications signal. The estimated information is then used with knowledge about the propagation channel to model the samples of the digital signal. The modeled samples are compared with actual samples of the digital signal to deduce phase errors in the digital signal. The phase errors are then used to deduce a frequency error in the digital signal that can be used to correct the samples of the digital signal and to correct the down-conversion process.

An automatic frequency control method re-modulates a binary data sequence output from an equalizer using the convolution of an estimated channel characteristic value function and a transfer function of the modulator in the transmitter of a communication system, to obtain a reference phase. The reference phase then is compared with a receiving phase to produce a phase error value. The phase error value is converted into a frequency error value, which is then converted into an analog control voltage and applied to a voltage controlled oscillator. Apparatus for performing the method includes an equalizer, a channel characteristic estimator, a re-modulator, a phase comparator, a frequency error estimator and a digital-to-analog converter, to thus improve the receiving performance of a receiver by digital implementation.

In a TDMA burst preamble, the phase is varied between .+-..pi./4 radians, and carrier synchronization is achieved by averaging the phase over a given interval. Symbol timing synchronization is achieved by filtering the upper sideband of a conventional delay-and-multiply circuit and demodulating the filtered upper sideband with a coherent carrier available by the end of the preamble. After the preamble, modulation removal is used to obtain the unmodulated carrier.

In this invention, resistive divider networks are used to generate the output vector array. A carrier wave reproducer device for use in the reception of a multi-phase digital phase-modulated waves for rapidly extracting the carrier wave without the generation of frequencies higher than the carrier frequency is disclosed. In its simplest embodiment, the device employs a delay detector and a cumulative adder circuit to derive a demodulated signal and a modulator for inversely modulating the input multi-phase digital phase-modulated wave with said demodulated signal. The reference carrier wave is then obtained from the output of the modulator. The same principle is used in alternative embodiments used in the reception of a burst form of signal transmitted with a preamble word having a specific pattern. These alternative embodiments take advantage of the preamble word generally included in a burst form of signal by additionally employing a demodulator for demodulating the input multi-phase digital phase-modulated wave through synchronized detection by making use of the reference carrier wave obtained from the modulator. In addition, a switching circuit is employed to supply the modulator with the demodulated output from the adder circuit at the beginning of reception of the phase-modulated wave, but after the reference carrier wave has been established, to supply the modulator with the output of the demodulator.

A method establishes a phase reference signal for trellis demodulating CPM modulated received signals by using phase reference signals and symbol timing estimates. Branch metrics signals representing the highest-probability path through the trellis are calculated to produce beat estimates of the modulation data. The branch metrics signals are phase shifted to produce phase shifted branch metrics (PSBM) for each path. At each symbol interval, the highest probability PSEM (HPPSBM) signal for the path is selected. The selected phase shifted branch metric adjusts the value of the phase reference signals. Another method estimates the transmitted signal from at least the estimated data and the phase reference signal. The estimated transmitted signal is phase shifted to produce phase shifted estimated transmitted signals, which are correlated with the received data signals to produce phase error signals, which are smoothed and correct the phase reference signal.
