Providing for improved tracking and correction of timing in wireless communications is disclosed herein. By way of example, a first algorithm can be employed to track timing of a wireless signal, based on one dimension of the signal. Additionally, a second algorithm based on a different dimension of the signal can be employed to verify the timing and reduce errors in timing analysis. Various signal dimensions can be employed for the analysis, including cyclic prefix, frequency, channel impulse response, or the like, or a combination thereof. Additionally, different channels of the wireless signal can also be analyzed by the first algorithm and the second algorithm. Furthermore, the second algorithm can be selected to reduce deficiencies identified in the first algorithm, to improve overall timing analysis, reduce undetected timing errors or false errors, and improve timing correction.

A synchronization device has a signal reception unit and a signal generation unit. The latter provides a multicarrier signal, which serves as an internally transmitted signal. The former receives the same type of externally received signal as the internally transmitted signal. An STO timing detection unit detects a position at which a correlation value in the correlation calculation between sampled data of the internally transmitted signal shifted at a predetermined sampling interval and sampled data of the externally received signal is maximum as an STO timing. A difference calculation unit calculates a difference between phases of the externally received signal and the internally transmitted signal at each subcarrier in a state in which the STO timing is detected. A correction control unit executes correction control on the signal generation unit such that a difference in a phase of each calculated subcarrier is added as a correction amount.

A timing unit adjusts the timing for transmission and reception of data according to the received synchronization and discovery signal.

Systems and methods for synchronizing a clock at a customer premises equipment (CPE) location with a master clock at a central office (CO) location are described. One embodiment is a method that comprises receiving, by a time-of-day transmission convergence (ToD-TC) module in the CPE, ToD information relating to the master clock. Based on the received information, time stamps are applied to reference data samples. The method further comprises transporting the ToD information by transporting the reference data samples with applied time stamps and utilizing time stamps of the reference data samples to synchronize the CPE clock with the master clock.

Methods and apparatus for initial cell search and selection using beamforming are described. An apparatus is configured with multiple receive beams and includes an antenna and a processor. The processor is operatively coupled to the antenna and sweeps a respective one of the multiple receive beams during each of multiple synchronization sub-frames, using a pre-defined sweep time and dwell period, to detect a synchronization signal. The processor also obtains symbol timing information and a synchronization signal index from the detected synchronization signal. The obtained synchronization signal index corresponds to a synchronization signal index of the set. The process decodes a first broadcast channel using the obtained symbol timing information, the obtained synchronization signal index and a predefined or blind-coded symbol distance between the detected synchronization signal and the first broadcast channel. A method of signal generation includes selecting a subset of contiguous OFDM symbols from a set of contiguous OFDM symbols, selecting a subset of contiguous subcarriers from a set of subcarriers, and generating a preamble that occupies the subset of contiguous subcarriers in the subset of contiguous OFDM symbols. The preamble includes portions in respective OFDM symbols of the subset of contiguous OFDM symbols. In the time domain each preamble portion corresponds to a repeating sequence of samples when subcarriers outside of the subset of contiguous subcarriers are filtered out. Generating the preamble may include flipping the sign of one or more occurrences of the repeating sequence for a final preamble portion and may include placing modulation symbols on regularly spaced subcarriers in the subset of contiguous subcarriers and phase-shifting the modulation symbols for a respective preamble portion with respect to a previous preamble portion.

A carrier-specific weighting factor is associated with each carrier of a multi-carrier signal. Using the carrier-specific weighting factors, a carrier frequency offset estimate is computed from received signals and estimated channel transfer functions associated with each of the carriers. Because greater weights are given to carriers whose frequencies include lower noise and/or carriers transmitting a known sequence of symbols, the estimate of the carrier frequency offset is improved. The carrier frequency offset estimate may then be applied in a feedback loop to phase-compensate a subsequently received signal.
