A method for providing a point-to-multipoint service to control point-to-multipoint connections using an intelligent network and a switched virtual circuit over an ATM network includes receiving a request from a calling party to establish a point-to-multipoint connection, determining if the calling party is authorized to make point-to-multipoint connections, rejecting the request if the calling party is not authorized to establish point-to-multipoint connections, analyzing the request to determine if the bandwidth requested for the point-to-multipoint connection is within authorized bandwidth limits, and rejecting the request if the bandwidth requested is not within authorized bandwidth limits. An intelligent network for providing VToA and point-to-multipoint connectivity is also provided.

Methods, systems, and computer program products for monitoring tunneled Internet protocol (IP) traffic on a high bandwidth IP network are disclosed. According to one method, a copy of a tunneled IP packet traversing an IP communications network is generated. The packet may include a payload having tunneled protocol address information. The tunneled protocol address information and the payload portion of the copied IP packet is read. The packet is distributed, using the tunneled protocol address information, to a function for providing at least one of packet classification and network monitoring service for the packet.

A system for efficiently reassembling packets from cells received on independent switching fabrics according to a serial high speed interface (HSI) protocol. The system includes redundancy in that fabrics may be removed by skipping the fabrics in striping and reassembly sequences. When fabrics are added, the fabrics are included in the striping and reassembly sequences. The system is efficient due in part to in-order transmission of cells serially across multiple fabrics. Full fabric bandwidth is thereby utilized without reordering overhead. Since packets are striped across all available fabrics, load is balanced across the fabrics.

A switch includes a port card for receiving packets from and sending packets to a network. The switch includes a fabric connected to the port card for switching the packets. The fabric has memory controllers which perform logical functions and in which portions of the packets are stored. The fabric has stages for switching the portions of the packets. The fabric has a mechanism for propagated lockdown of each stage wherein each stage is idle a correct number of cycles and each memory controller performs the same logical functions the corresponding same logical cycles. A method for switching packets includes the steps of introducing idles a correct number of cycles in each stage of memory controllers in fabrics of a switch to maintain the fabrics in logical synchronization. Then there is the step performing with each memory controller in the fabrics same logical functions at corresponding same logical cycles.
