The secondary seals become operative upon the presence of a leak in the primary seals such that the rotary joint can continue to be used until a scheduled maintenance outage. A selective vent is used to route leaking fluid so that one or the other of the primary and secondary seals can be activated.

    摘要: A system for pressure molding plastic material includes a source of hot flowable plastic material and a manifold for receiving hot flowable plastic material from the source and for transporting the hot flowable plastic material to a nozzle that is disposed within a nozzle cavity. A heater is provided to heat the nozzle and is positioned outside of, but close to, the nozzle cavity and includes at least one electrical supply wire. A shut-off seal is positioned within the nozzle cavity to seal the nozzle with respect to the wall defining the shut-off cavity. In addition, a secondary seal is most advantageously positioned between the shut-off seal and the heater for ensuring that any hot flowable plastic material that might leak through the shut-off seal does not come into contact with the electrical supply wire. This has been found to increase the reliability and operating life of conventional pressure molding systems.

    摘要: A shutdown seal is provided in a pump for activation to prevent passage of fluid along a shaft relative to a fluid-containing housing of the pump through which the shaft extends. The shutdown seal is an annular member having a mounting flange and a sealing collar. The mounting flange is attached to the housing, and the sealing collar is disposed about the shaft. The annular member is constructed of shape memory metal material which below its transition temperature has an expanded configuration in which its annular sealing collar portion is spaced from the shaft so as to define a deactivated unsealed condition of the shutdown seal. On the other hand, above the transition temperature of the material the annular member has a contracted configuration in which its sealing collar contacts the shaft so as to define an activated sealed condition of the shutdown seal. In one embodiment, the annular member of the shutdown seal forms a stationary part of a slip joint secondary seal coupled between the housing and shaft. In another embodiment, the annular member of the shutdown seal forms a hollow shell attached to the interior of a stationary part of a slip joint secondary seal coupled between the housing and shaft.

    摘要: The shaft seal between a fixed housing wall (2) and a revolving shaft (1) consists of a collar (6) fixedly connected to the shaft (1), respectively one leg of the U-shaped sealing rings (69, 71) pressing against this collar. The cavities (14, 15) of the sealing rings (69, 71) can be acted upon, via connections, by a pressure medium, wherein respectively one of the legs of the sealing rings (69, 71) is pressed sealingly against the collar (6). The annular chamber (17) coaxial to the end face of the collar (6) can be filled with a lubricant and/or a coolant by way of an inlet and outlet. This structurally simple shaft seal is arranged in compact fashion. This seal operates in a safe and reliable manner. For the prevention of chemical accidents, a circulating pressure medium can be provided to act only on the sealing ring (69) located closest to the reaction chamber (3), and this pressure medium can be continuously monitored for traces from the reaction chamber (3) by way of an indicator. Upon the occurrence of a leak, the cavity (15) of the second sealing ring (71) is automatically pressurized, which then provides the further sealing action. Thereafter, an exchange or repair of the sealing unit (57) can be prepared at leisure.

    摘要: The seal protection apparatus is intended to provide protection for a main mechanical seal. It comprises a first seal ring fast on the shaft of a pump and a second seal ring which is connected to the casing of the pump by means of a flexible, annular diaphragm which is exposed on one side to pumped product in the casing. The combination of seal rings and diaphragm define one end of a service liquid compartment which is supplied with pressurized, clean service water. The other end of the compartment is defined by the main seal. With a flow of service water to the compartment, the seal rings are forced apart by the water pressure. Water is able to leak between the rings into the casing thereby denying the pumped product access to the compartment and main seal. On the other hand, if the supply of service water should fail for any reason, the pumped product acts on the diaphragm and forces the seal rings together. The pumped product is again denied access to the main seal.

    摘要: A seal assembly has a pair of relatively rotatable sub-assemblies adapted to be attached and sealed respectively to relatively fixed and relatively rotatable members to confine the flow of fluid through the space between the members to a restricted passage. One of the sub-assemblies includes one of a pair of relatively rotatable seal rings. Coupling means are operable to selectively couple the other seal ring of the pair to a sub-assembly in a stand-by state in which the seal rings are not in relatively rotated engagement and, alternately, in a working state in which the seal rings are in relatively rotated engagement to seal the restricted passage. Preferably, the coupling means are operable while the sub-assemblies remain in respective installed positions; include means relatively movable to seal the opposed faces of the rings from the restricted passage in the stand-by state and to expose those faces to the passage in the working state, and are operable to couple the second seal ring alternatively to the respective sub-assemblies to provide the respective states of the seal rings. Preferably also, additional seal means are provided for sealing the restricted passage.

    摘要: A pump assembly having an impeller for pumping a fluid from an intake to an outlet, a prime mover for driving the impeller, and a primary mechanical seal assembly between the prime mover and the impeller which is located in a housing. The mechanical seal assembly substantially prevents leakage of the fluid being pumped along a shaft connecting the impeller and the prime mover. A secondary mechanical seal means is located in the housing between the prime mover and the mechanical seal assembly. The secondary seal means is constructed of a material, such as carbon, which will collapse under pressure of the fluid being pumped upon failure of the primary mechanical seal assembly, to substantially prevent the leakage of fluid along the shaft and to the exterior of the housing.
