摘要： An apparatus which forms and transfers thin films of a viscous or freely flowable liquid has a housing which supports or includes a vessel for a supply of liquid, a fountain roll which is rotatable in the housing and a median portion of which extends transversely of an outlet of the vessel so that liquid which flows into the outlet forms a layer on the periphery of the median portion, and a cylindrical doctor having at one end a diametrically extending blade which defines with the periphery of the median portion of the fountain roll a narrow clearance through which a film of liquid passes toward a station where the film is transferred onto a ductor roll. The doctor is adjustable radially of the fountain roll and the latter is surrounded by two O-rings which prevent the liquid layer from spreading from the median portion to the end faces of the fountain roll. A further O-ring is mounted in the housing to sealingly engage and to prevent leakage of liquid along the periphery of the doctor.

摘要： The seam of the tubular wrapper for the rod-like filler of tobacco or filter material in a cigarette or filter rod making machine is heated by a first heating element during acceleration of the machine from zero speed to normal operating speed. When the machine reaches the normal speed, the seam is additionally heated by a second heating element whose heating action is more pronounced that that of the first heating element. The first heating element is caused to engage the moving seam when the first increment of adhesive film, which is applied to one marginal portion of the wrapper by a paster, reaches the first heating element. The second heating element is moved into engagement with the seam when the RPM of the prime mover for the filler transporting conveyor reaches a preselected value. Both heating elements are disengaged from the seam in response to deactivation of the prime mover with a delay which corresponds to the interval elapsing between deactivation of the prime mover and the transport of last adhesive-coated increment of the one marginal portion to a position of register with the first heating element.

摘要： Discrete uniting bands which are used in a filter tipping machine to connect filter plugs with plain cigarettes consist of foraminous material, and the permeability of such material is varied, when necessary, by changing the quantity of adhesive which is applied to the uniting bands prior to convolution around the respective plain cigarettes and filter plugs. This ensures that each convoluted uniting band admits a preselected quantity of cool atmospheric air into the column of tobacco smoke when the respective filter cigarette is lighted. The paster which applies adhesive to a continuous web which is about to be subdivided into uniting bands is adjusted in response to signals which are generated by a testing device for the wrappers of filter cigarettes and denote the permeability of wrappers of successive filter cigarettes. If the permeability is too high, the paster is adjusted by reducing or increasing the quantity of adhesive which is applied to successive unit areas or unit lengths of the running web. This can be achieved by changing the thickness of the layer of adhesive or by changing the area of that portion of each unit length of the web which is coated with adhesive.

摘要： A machine for making cigarettes from empty filter tip cigarette tubes and from tobacco cartridges consisting of compressed tobacco contained in a thin sheath of cellulose film or other non-consumable material, the length of the cartridge being slightly greater than that of the cigarette tube. A cartridge is inserted into a cigarette tube, and the combination is slid along a trough and pushed against a stop. The stop, which is carried by a long rod coaxial with the trough, prevents movement of the tobacco while allowing movement of the sheath past the stop. The sheath is then stripped off by a slider which slides back and forth along the rod, thus leaving the tobacco in the cigarette tube.

摘要： Webs of cigarette paper, filter wrapping paper or metallic or plastic foil in cigarette rod making, filter rod making or cigarette packing machines are spliced to each other by uniting bands which are removed from a strip-shaped flexible carrier and delivered to the splicing station by a pivotable lever, either in response to reciprocation of a carriage by hand or by a motor or in response to automatic actuation of a fluid-operated motor so that its piston rod performs forward and return strokes. Each uniting band is adhesive at both sides and the splicing station is located between the path of movement of the running web and the path of movement of a fresh web which latter is accelerated to the speed of the running web prior to start of the splicing operation.

摘要： A web of cigarette paper, imitation cork or similar sheet-like material which is used as a tubular wrapper for rod-like fillers of tobacco or filter material or which is subdivided into discrete uniting bands for plain cigarettes and filter plugs is coated with one or more layers of an aqueous dispersion of hotmelt. The layer or layers are thereupon heated to expel water therefrom before the web is draped around one or more rod-shaped smokers' products. The layer or layers are thereupon heated to a temperature at which the dried hotmelt melts, either before or during and/or subsequent to draping, to activate the hotmelt. If the web is converted into uniting bands prior to draping around groups of coaxial rod-shaped articles, and if the filter plugs of filter cigarettes are to be provided with holes for admission of atmospheric air into the column of tobacco smoke, the web is provided with two spaced-apart layers of aqueous dispersion of hotmelt prior to subdivision into uniting bands and the holes for admission of atmospheric air are formed in the two layers subsequent to expulsion of liquid.

摘要： In an apparatus for the packaging of unfilled cigarette tubes into boxes, a counter counts a predetermined number of tubes and these are subsequently advanced to a holding position and then pushed laterally into a containment member having substantially the same dimensions as a box into which the tubes are to be placed. The containment member is pivotable and rotatable and adapted to have a box positioned thereon. The box is filled with cigarette tubes from the containment member on pivoting and rotation of the containment member without any handling of tubes by the operator, thus avoiding damage to the tubes.

摘要： Splicing apparatus for joining the paper web from successive reels in a cigarette or cigarette filter rod making machine includes provision for running each reel closer to the end in a controlled manner to reduce wastage of paper. For that purpose the diameter of the in-use reel may be monitored by an arm coupled to an electrical detector with an averaging or smoothing circuit so that a signal is obtained which is insensitive to reel non-circularity or eccentricity. Alternatively the end of the paper may be detected as a result of the loss of tension in the paper.
