    Abstract: A system and method for analyzing a sputum sample from a subject suspected of having lung cancer comprising obtaining a plurality of cells from the sputum sample from the subject, marking the plurality of cells with i) a plurality of cell lineage specific marker compositions, ii) a cell viability composition and iii) a tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) composition; analyzing with the flow cytometer the plurality of cells marked with i-iii to obtain a subpopulation selected for cell size from the plurality of cells based upon an automatically selected bead size exclusion gate; from the cell size selected subpopulation, selecting a viable singlet population of cells using an automated non-debris gate and an automated singlets gate; from the viable singlet population of cells, obtaining flow cytometer values based upon the plurality of cell lineage specific marker compositions, the viability marker and the TCPP marker; applying a trained classifier to meta data from the subject and the flow cytometric values obtained; and generating, based upon the application of the trained classifier, a classification for the sputum sample wherein the classification is selected from a plurality of classification options comprising cancer and non-cancer.

    Abstract: An epidural needle with a mechanism to receive real-time feedback on the location of the epidural needle during insertion process of the epidural needle. In particular, the epidural needle includes a spring and a pair of needles coupled to a force-measuring sensor for a continuous measurement of the force at a tip of the epidural needle as the epidural needle is inserted. The spring is enclosed in a spring section between a lug section and a needle section. The lug section comprises the force-measuring sensor and the needle section comprises a needle to be inserted. The lug section, the spring section and the needle section are axially aligned along an epidural needle axis. A force is transmitted from the needle section through the spring of the spring section to the force-measuring sensor of the lug section.

    Abstract: In an embodiment, the claimed invention includes an oral-fluid collection and testing device that. is simple to operate. The device includes a body assembly and a cap assembly that are easy to handle by a user. A collection sponge projects from an end of the body assembly for absorbing the oral fluid of a donor, A cap assembly is easily aligned with the body assembly by way of visual alignment indicators on both the body and the cap. Once the cap is aligned with the body, a user simply pushes the cap onto the ‘body, which causes a first stage fluid, flow. More specifically, a buffer fluid is released from the cap and mixes with the oral fluid collected on the sponge—After waiting a short time* the cap is rotated, then pushed again, causing a second-stage fluid flow in which the sponge is compressed such that the buffer fluid/oral fluid exits the sponge and flows toward a. pair of test strips. A user can then easily view the test results by observing a visual indication, such as a color change of the test strips through a viewing window.
