    摘要: An apparatus and method is provided to maintain vertebrae in a desired relationship. The apparatus includes a rod, a plurality of clamps, and a plurality of fastener assemblies. The method involves inserting threaded members into openings in a displaced vertebra and at least one vertebra on each side of the displaced vertebra. A clamp is placed on each fastener. The rod is bent to correspond to a desired spinal curvature and inserted into the clamps. A nut is tightened on each threaded member to hold the clamp to each vertebra and to press the clamp against the rod to hold the rod against axial and rotational movement.

    摘要: An intervertebral stabilization implant is described including an elongated central portion and a pair of reverse wings disposed at an angle of between 75.degree. and 80.degree. with respect to the elongated central portion of the implant. The method of utilizing the implant is also disclosed including exposing the pre-vertebral space as would be done in a Cloward's procedure. The vertebral disks below the luxating vertebra is widely resected, avoiding if at all possible the use of the intervertebral spreader. The A-P diameter of the vertebral bodies are measured and the intervertebral stabilizing implant of proper length is elected taking into account a small correction of the luxation of up to 2 millimeters maximum, which would upset the compression effect of the retaining wings over soft tissue and bone. The implant is inserted sideways, utlizing no force. After the posterior wing is barely in the canal it is rotated 90.degree. so that the posterior wing rests behind the lower vertebra and the superior or anterior wing is in front of the reduced vertebra.

    摘要: A power tool, such as a surgical drill, has a tool element retained in a collet coupled to the output spindle of the tool. Resilient member constantly maintains the collet in its closed position. Upon rotation of the spindle in a reverse direction, opposite to its normal driving direction, a cam is actuated to open the collet against the force of the resilient member, thereby facilitating removal of the tool element from the collet. Preferably, the tool is of the cordless type and has a reversible electric motor controlled by a pair of triggers mounted on the pistol-grip handle for the tool. The triggers are conveniently disposed adjacent to each other and are easily distinguishable from one another, thereby providing for a convenient one-hand operation of the tool.

    摘要: A tool for forming a stepped blind hole in bone for receipt of a fracture reducing and stabilizing surgical implant. The tool comprises a small diameter drill portion axially adjustable with respect to a larger diameter reamer portion. A conical portion includes cutting surfaces to chamfer the entrance of the hole and also includes non-cutting portions which serve to limit penetration of the tool into the bone. The tool is cannulated to allow its use in conjunction with a previously installed Kirschner guide wire.

    摘要: The invention relates to an elongate plate for osteosynthesis. The plate comprises at least two screw holes and a respective hole-free longitudinal section separating each neighboring pair of the screw holes. A spacing, perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the plate, between two mutually opposite surfaces of at least two sections containing the screw holes is greater than that between two mutually opposite surfaces of the hole-free sections. The plate exhibits at least in the region of the screw holes a bending resistance amount W=I/e along a plane extending substantially centrally of the plate in the longitudinal direction of the plate and intersecting substantially perpendicularly that surface of the plate which is intended to rest on a bone. The bending resistance moment W=I/e lies between a lower and an upper limiting value, the lower limiting value being at most 30% smaller than the upper limiting value, wherein I is the polar moment of inertia, and e is the maximum value of the distance of the outline bounding the cross-sectional area from a neutral surface of the plate.

    摘要: An artificial hinge pin having a self-cutting threaded portion is inserted into a prepared bone with reduced reaction moment by a hand-held power tool which imposes a rotary oscillating movement on the pin during the insertion process. The tool has an output shaft driven by an overriding ratchet type coupling providing repeated impacts to the output shaft. A plurality of elastic rods connected to the output shaft are arranged coaxially around the shaft and are anchored to a rotary brake disk. Braking force on the disk is controlled by an adjustable compression spring. The eigenfrequency of the elastic system comprising the rods and output shaft may be adjusted to the impact frequency of the ratchet coupling.
