Disclosed is a method of manufacturing a multilayer zirconia block for artificial teeth, including a first material mixing step of mixing a 3 mol % yttrium oxide-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal and an organic binder, a second material mixing step of mixing a 3 mol % yttrium oxide-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal, a 5 mol % yttrium oxide-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal and an organic binder, a third material mixing step of mixing a 5 mol % yttrium oxide-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal and an organic binder, a compression molding step of sequentially placing the mixtures obtained in the first material mixing step, the second material mixing step, and the third material mixing step in a mold for compression molding and performing compression molding, and a calcination step of calcining a compression molded product obtained in the compression molding step. This method provides a multilayer zirconia block that contains yttrium oxide, the amount of which is adjusted in the manufacturing process, thus showing a color similar to that of natural teeth after impregnation with a coloring solution.

A dental adhesive composition has an adhesive component and an activator component. The adhesive composition has a volatile organic solvent component, one or more polymerizable (meth)acrylate compounds optionally containing fillers, and a polymerization photoinitiator. The adhesive component may also be a substantially homogeneous mixture of one or more polymerizable (meth)acrylate compounds and an effective amount of a photoinitiator, without a solvent. The activator component includes an aromatic sulfinate salt and an activator component solvent. A method for adhering a restorative to a dental surface includes preparing the surface for restoration; applying a mixture of an adhesive component and an activator component to the prepared cavity, thereby forming a coated cavity surface; and, applying a direct or indirect dental restorative to the coated cavity surface.

A modified amalgam composition forming an adhesive bond with tooth structure treated with a dental adhesive. The modified amalgam can be prepared by admixing particulate additives into conventional amalgam alloy powder to form a modified alloy powder and then triturating the modified alloy powder with mercury. The modified amalgam when applied to a prepared tooth cavity that has been precoated with an acrylate- or methacrylate-functional dental adhesive results in an adhesive bond between the modified amalgam and coated tooth structure. Preferred particulate additives for the amalgam alloy powder are acrylate- or methacrylate-functional polymers, metal salts of acrylates or methacrylates, nonmetallic fillers, oxidizing agents and reducing agents.

A multi-component composition suitable for amalgamation with mercury to form a dental amalgam, an amalgam and a method for producing such a multi-component composition. The multi-component composition has: from 30 to 90% (by weight) of a first component containing at least 30% silver, at least 20% tin and at least 10% copper; from 10 to 70% (by weight) of a second component containing at least 30% silver, at least 20% tin and at least 10% copper; and up to 15% (by weight) of a third component containing silver and/or alloy powder containing at least 80% (by weight) silver. The first component is spherically shaped atomized alloy powder. The second component is mechanically worked atomized alloy powder. The surface area to volume ratio of the powder of the second component is greater than the surface area to volume ratio of the powder of the first component.

A corrosion-resistant dental alloy is disclosed which has improved handling characteristics during the filling of a dental cavity. The alloy is a substantially uniform blend of three types of particles having the same chemical components, but differing in morphology and, optionally, in proportions of components. One type of particle is spherical or spheroidal in form. The second type of particle is a randomly-shaped microcrystalline form. The third type of particle is a flake-like particle. Handling characteristics of an amalgam prepared from such three particles can be adjusted to suit the requirements of the user by varying the relative proportions of the three types of particles while still retaining the corrosion resistance of the particles.

Dental restorations are prepared by preparing a cavity within a carious tooth for receiving a dental amalgam filling;Coating the surfaces of the cavity with a layer of an adhesive-metal lining composition, the metal of the composition being characterized by the capability of being amalgamated by diffusion of the mercury from a subsequently applied dental amalgam filling, and which is further characterized by a corrosion resistance which is higher than the corrosion resistance of the subsequently applied dental amalgam filling; and packing the remaining adhesive-metal coated cavity with Ag-Hg-Sn dental amalgam, whereby free mercury present in the amalgam is diffused into, and amalgamates with the metal of the adhesive-metal lining coating, so as to form an integral restoration of the dental amalgam and the coating, and the adhesive effectively promotes bonding between the integral restoration and the cavity surfaces.
