Abstract: A percutaneous circulatory support device includes a housing having a proximal end portion and a motor carried by the housing. A driving magnet is operatively coupled to the motor, and a driven magnet is operatively coupled to the driving magnet. The driven magnet includes a frustoconical shape. An impeller is disposed within the housing, and the impeller is operatively coupled to the driven magnet. The motor rotates the impeller, via the driving magnet and the driven magnet, relative to the impeller housing to cause blood to flow through the percutaneous circulatory support device and blood is inhibited from pooling in the proximal end portion of the impeller housing.

Abstract: A temporary, removable mechanical circulatory support heart-assist device has at least two propellers or impellers. Each propeller or impeller has a number of blades arranged around an axis of rotation. The blades are configured to pump blood. The two propellers or impellers rotate in opposite directions from each other. The device can be configured to be implanted and removed with minimally invasive surgery.

Abstract: An intravascular blood pump (1) comprises a pump casing (2) having a blood flow inlet (21) and a blood flow outlet (22), and an impeller (3) arranged in said pump casing (2) so as to be rotatable about an axis of rotation, wherein the impeller (3) has blades (31) sized and shaped for conveying blood from the blood flow inlet (21) to the blood flow outlet (22). The blood pump (1) further comprises a drive unit (104) for rotating the impeller (3), the drive unit (104) comprising a plurality of posts (140) arranged about the axis of rotation (10). Coil windings (47) around the posts are sequentially controllable so as to create a rotating magnetic field. The shaft portion (141) of each of the posts (140) comprises a soft magnetic material which is discontinuous in cross-section transverse to the longitudinal axis of the respective post (140).

Abstract: A fluid pump conveys a fluid, such as blood. A fluid channel that is bounded by a channel wall and a rotor arranged in the fluid channel and that is rotatably mounted about a pivot point of the bearing with a mechanical, hydrodynamic and/or hydrostatic, axial and radial bearing. The fluid channel has a spherical section and the rotor has a rotor body and a conveying element that is arranged within the spherical section of the fluid channel and configured to generate a substantially spherical rotational area of the rotor. The spherical center of the spherical section of the fluid channel and the spherical center of the spherical rotational area substantially coincide with the pivot point so that a minimum distance between the rotor and the channel wall is maintained in the spherical section upon a tilting of the rotor.

Abstract: A blood flow assist system can include an impeller assembly including an impeller shaft and an impeller on the impeller shaft, a primary flow pathway disposed along an exterior surface of the impeller. The system can include a rotor assembly at a proximal portion of the impeller shaft. A secondary flow pathway can be disposed along a lumen of the impeller shaft. During operation of the blood flow assist system, blood can be pumped proximally along the primary flow pathway and the secondary flow pathway. The system can include a sleeve bearing distal the impeller. The system can include a drive unit having a distal end disposed distal a proximal end of the second impeller. The drive unit comprising a drive magnet and a drive bearing between the drive magnet and the impeller assembly.

Abstract: In some examples, a medical system includes a pump is configured to provide a pulsating blood flow. The pump may provide the pulsating flow to assist the pumping action of a heart. An impeller is configured to impart energy to the blood flow when the impeller rotates around an eye axis extending through an impeller eye defined by the impeller. The pump includes a magnetic bearing configured such that, as the impeller rotates around the eye axis, the eye axis translates around a post axis defined by a post mechanically supported by a pump housing. The medical system may include a controller configured to control a bearing magnetic field and/or a stator magnetic field to control a pressure of the pulsating flow and/or a speed of the pump.

Abstract: An extracorporeal system for lung assist includes a housing which includes a blood flow inlet in fluid connection with a pressurizing stator compartment, a fiber bundle compartment in fluid connection with the pressurizing stator compartment via a flow channel within the housing, and a blood flow outlet in fluid connection with the fiber bundle compartment. An impeller is rotatably positioned within the pressurizing compartment for pressurizing blood entering the pressurizing stator compartment from the blood flow inlet. The system further includes a fiber bundle positioned within the fiber bundle compartment. The fiber bundle includes a plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers. The plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers is adapted to permit diffusion of gas between blood and an interior of the hollow gas permeable fibers. The plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers is positioned such that blood flows around the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers when flowing through the fiber bundle compartment. The plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers extend generally perpendicular to the direction of bulk flow of blood through the fiber bundle compartment from the flow channel to the blood flow outlet. The system further includes a gas inlet in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with inlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers and a gas outlet in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with outlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers.
