Abstract: Enzyme-immobilizing MOFs and methods for their use in enzymatically catalyzed reactions are provided. The MOFs are channel-type MOFs that present a hierarchical pore structure comprising a first set of large channels sized for enzyme immobilization and a second set of smaller channels running alongside of the large channels that remain enzyme-free and allow for reactant delivery to the enzymes and product expulsion from the larger channels.

Additionally, the expression methods disclosed herein can produce ChE preparations consisting of extract or purified forms that can be produced in high amounts and are highly thermally stable. These ChE products can be used in vitro detection, detoxification and decontamination methods.

Abstract: An assembly containing a shelf-stable formulation for decontaminating skin exposed to toxic compounds located in a package formed with water and potassium bicarbonate in a first chamber; and a sponge, diacetylmonoxime (DAM), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) located in a second chamber. The package includes a barrier between the first chamber and the second chamber, with the barrier being configured to be rapidly removed when needed to enable the water and potassium bicarbonate to enter the second chamber. The package is made by placing the water and potassium bicarbonate in the first chamber of a package; mixing the DAM with PEG to form a DAM:PEG mixture; infusing the sponge with the DAM:PEG mixture to distribute DAM within the sponge; and placing the sponge, DAM and PEG in a second chamber of the package. Infusing the sponge includes solubilizing the DAM:PEG mixture in ethanol or another low boiling point solvent to form an ethanol-DAM-PEG solution and applying the ethanol-DAM-PEG solution evenly to the sponge. The ethanol is removed by applying heat and/or vacuum to the sponge.

Abstract: A method and composition of matter for detecting and decontaminating hazardous chemicals, the composition of matter including: a magnetic material for any of chemisorbing, molecularly dissociating, or decomposing a hazardous chemical, wherein the magnetic material changes its magnetic moment upon any of chemisorption, decomposition, and molecular dissociation of the hazardous chemical and the change in magnetic moment is used to detect the presence of the hazardous chemical, and wherein the hazardous chemical includes any of toxic industrial chemicals, chemical warfare agents, and chemical warfare agent related compounds.

Abstract: Compositions, devices, and methods for destroying chemical warfare agents, independent of their chemical make-up, include (i) at least one reactive metal; (ii) at least one oxidizer; and (iii) a binder. In one embodiment, the self-sustaining reactive composition includes magnesium powder, iron oxide powder, potassium perchlorate powder, and silicone gel. In another embodiment, the self-sustaining reactive composition includes manganese powder, lithium perchlorate powder, lithium peroxide powder, and silicone gel. The reactive metal(s), oxidizer(s), binder, and their respective amounts, are selected such that, following ignition of the composition, the composition is capable of producing a solid mass of ash (wicking composition) that increases the surface area of the chemical agent material and provides a site for combustion and/or thermal degradation of the chemical agent to occur.

Abstract: A transportable and modular field-deployable hydrolysis system for neutralizing toxic chemical agents is described. The system comprises a transportable chemical process plant that is capable of operating in a remote location without significant site infrastructure. The system is also capable of operating in a maritime, shipboard environment. A flexible design allows processing of chemical agents in both batch and continuous flow modes, as well as collection and accumulation of agents from a variety of containers whose form and size may not be known until the system is on-site.
