A bottle-shaped can manufacturing method for forming a shoulder portion having a slope and a diametrically small cylindrical neck portion integrally by further working a bottom side of a bottomed cylindrical can which is formed thinner at its trunk wall than at its bottom wall by drawing a metallic sheet having a thickness of 0.1 to 0.4 mm and by executing at least one thinning working of a bending/extending working and an ironing working. This method comprises: a step of preforming a bottom corner portion of the can into a curved shoulder face having an arcuate longitudinal section; a first diametrically small cylindrical portion forming step of drawing the bottom of the can into a diametrically smaller bottomed cylindrical shape than the trunk portion, with the curved shoulder face of the bottom corner portion being unwrinkled; a second diametrically small cylindrical portion forming step of drawing the bottomed cylindrical portion drawn from the can bottom into a diametrically smaller bottomed cylindrical shape, with the bottom corner portion being unwrinkled by the surface of a tool; and a shoulder portion reforming step of pushing and extending the shoulder portion, which is formed by the first diametrically small cylindrical portion forming step and the second diametrically small cylindrical portion forming step into a smooth slope leading to the curved shoulder face on the trunk side, after the diameter of the bottomed cylindrical portion formed by executing the drawing working of the second diametrically small cylindrical portion forming step once or two or more times becomes substantially equal to a diameter of the neck portion.

Exemplary embodiments of a can body making apparatus include a frame, a contact member and a reciprocation assembly. The reciprocation assembly comprises a ram and a guide assembly. The contact member is for dynamically interfacing with at least a surface of the reciprocation assembly and comprises a material capable of withstanding a minimum PV value of 50,000 psi*ft/min without lubrication. Exemplary embodiments of a reciprocation apparatus are further provided that include a frame, a contact member and a reciprocation assembly. The reciprocation assembly includes an elongated member and a guide assembly. The guide assembly includes a main body portion and a removable cartridge. The cartridge houses the contact member and is adapted to secure the contact member relative to the guide assembly. The contact member is for dynamically interfacing with at least a surface of the reciprocation assembly. In addition, the contact member and cartridge are adapted for common insertion and removal relative to the main body portion of the guide assembly.

A bottom forming station for forming a metal can having a sidewall and base portion is provided. The bottom forming station comprises a punch sleeve. The punch sleeve comprises a body having a sidewall that defines a bore for securely receiving a punch nose. The punch sleeve sidewall has a first section that corresponds to the shape of at least a portion of a beverage can base. The punch sleeve sidewall has a second section that corresponds to at least a portion of a beverage can sidewall profile. The second surface is integrally coupled with the first surface. The punch sleeve sidewall has a third section that is adapted to communicate with a punch nose and form a slip line that has a junction area in a non-active area. The third section is integrally coupled with the first and second sections. A bottom forming station also comprises a punch nose. The punch nose includes a body having a sidewall. The sidewall has a first section that corresponds to the shape of at least a portion of a beverage can base. The punch nose sidewall has a second section that is integrally coupled with the first section. The punch nose is mechanically coupled within the bore of the punch sleeve with the second surface of the punch nose in communication with the third section of the punch sleeve sidewall such that a slip line is formed with a junction area in a non-active area.

A method is provided for ironing a cup to a selected wall thickness, using a mandrel that pushes the cup through several ironing rings that are axially aligned with the central axis of the mandrel. The method includes selecting a wall thickness, providing a resistive heater associated with at least one of the punch, the ram and the ironing rings, and controlling a gap between the punch and the ironing rings, and thus the wall thickness of the ironed can body, by setting a temperature of at least one of the punch, the ram and the ironing rings. The temperature is set by controlling electrical current in the resistive heater to provide a controlled gap between the mandrel and ironing rings, to produce a wall thickness of the ironed can body equal to the selected wall thickness when the can body is pushed through the ironing rings by the mandrel.

Process for the wall ironing of a product in sheet form, which is formed from a metal sheet coated on at least one side with a layer of plastic, the wall-ironing tool comprising a forming surface which the product with a plastic coating layer moves along during the wall ironing, and the forming surface being at an entry angle with respect to the direction of movement of the product, whereby the entry angle varies over the length of the forming surface, in the direction of movement of the product past the forming surface, this entry being smaller in a starting zone of the forming surface than in the subsequent zone thereof.

A can forming tool pack includes internally cooled die modules. Each die module includes at least one die nib held in a case. Fluid cooling medium is supplied to multiple inlets provided circumferentially in each case, spaced symmetrically around the case. The cooling fluid is channeled from the inlets through clearances between an outer surface of the die nib and the case to cool the die nib. Outlets are spaced circumferentially around the case to return the cooling fluid to the medium supply.

A casing for cylindrical electrochemical cells, for example, alkaline cells or lithium cells. The casing is characterized by having a non-uniform wall thickness. The casing comprises a cylindrical body surface, an open end and an integrally formed closed bottom. A portion of the casing body forms the peripheral edge of the casing at the open end thereof. The casing body surface has a wall thickness which is less than the wall thickness of the casing bottom. The casing has a peripheral edge which has a wall thickness which is greater than the wall thickness of the body surface. The peripheral edge wall thickness is desirably about the same or greater than the wall thickness of the casing bottom. The casing is formed by subjecting a sheet of metal to a series of discrete punching steps. A partially formed cup is punched through a die cavity in each step thereby progressively drawing the cup to a progressively reduced diameter and increased length. This is accomplished desirably without changing any portion of the cup's wall thickness. The cup is subjected to a finishing step wherein the wall thickness of the body surface is reduced without altering the wall thickness of the bottom. The wall thickness of the peripheral edge remains the same or is increased in the finishing step.

A method and apparatus for continuously forming cases from blanks using a rotary turret. Blanks are deposited near dies located on the turret. Each blank is centered on the rotary turret using an associated centering mechanism so that the blank is centered over the die. A punch aligned with the die is drives toward an extended position to push the blank through the die, thereby forming a case. The punch and centering mechanism retract as an ejector extends to remove the case from the die. A redraw sleeve coaxial with the punch strips the case from the punch to deposit the punch on the extended ejector. Subsequent turrets may be connected through transfer wheels to the first turret for performing redrawing operations until a case with the desired dimensions is obtained.
