A storage vessel filled with a granular composition for forming mold parts has a bottom opening aligned with an opening in a pressure vessel located directly below the storage vessel. Upon being filled with the granular composition from the storage vessel, the pressure vessel is arranged so that the opening can be closed. The pressure vessel is movable vertically toward and away from the storage vessel. In its upper position it can be filled with the composition, and in its lower position can evacuate the granular composition into a cavity in a core molding device through nozzles situated at the bottom of the pressure vessel. The nozzles are directed into bores in the molding device and allow the granular material to exit when a compressed air source within the pressure vessel is activated.

In a system for the production of molds for casting, a pair of pattern plates are disposed in an opposed facing relationship with a frame located therebetween in a manner whereby the opposing pattern surfaces of the plates, together with the frame, define an enclosed cavity within which a casting mold section may be formed. The frame is preferably provided with an opening through which the cavity may be filled with molding material which, after hardening, forms a mold section. After separation of the pattern plates and frame, the mold section is conveyed into assembled relationship with one or more other mold sections in order to form a mold for casting. Pattern plates and frames may be arranged in a mass production facility to continuously form mold sections which, when assembled, will provide a mold stack for producing multiple castings.

A series of expendable shell molds is formed in a permanent pattern having a series of connected mold cavities. A passage extends from outside the pattern into each end of the series. A suspension of parting agent is blown by gas or superheated steam into the cavities through one of the passages while the other is vented through an orifice of controlled size to maintain the desired pressure. To coat evenly the parting agent may then be blown in the opposite direction through the cavities. Thereafter molding sand is blown into the pattern through one or both of the passages. Imperfect closing of the separatable pattern is detected by blowing air into a third passage which ends at the parting plane. The air is supplied from a constant pressure source through an orifice of predetermined size and the pressure is measured on the down-stream side of the orifice. A blow box connected to a sand hopper is pivoted to be swung toward and away from the pattern. A sand valve and a vent valve cooperate to dump sand from the hopper rapidly into the blow box. Gas under pressure is distributed throughout the sand from below to fluidize the sand and simultaneously force is applied above the sand to flow the mass into the pattern.

A swinging blow-vent nozzle is mounted at each end of the passage, the two nozzles being rotationally fixed to each other. In one position the first nozzle blows into the pattern while the second nozzle vents the pattern. In a second position the second nozzle blows into the pattern while the first nozzle vents the pattern. In a third position one of the nozzles blocks the passage while the other has been swung out of the way to provide access for a sand blow box which can then blow sand into the pattern. The nozzles are clamped against the pattern by a hydraulic cylinder which moves them toward each other on a shaft. The device includes means for separating the pattern, lifting the gang of molds out of the pattern and stripping the molds from pins on which they are formed or by which they are lifted. The device for elevating the finished molds includes means for blowing out the molds as the patterns are raised. The apparatus is particularly suitable for making cores for making tappet bodies and for making molds for casting engine valves.

A metal casting system including novel process and apparatus wherein the shape of the casting is defined by a thin thermal degrading film supported by a particulate bed. A pattern having the shape of the desired casting is surrounded by the tight fitting film with one end of the pattern exposed. A particulate bed is tightly packed about the film-surrounded pattern. A reduced fluid pressure is established within the particulate bed relative to the pattern so that the surrounding film is tightly held by atmospheric pressure against the particulate bed and slightly released from the pattern. The pattern is removed from the surrounding film and leaves therein a cavity bounded by the film with the shape of the desired casting. The cavity is filled with molten metal for forming the desired casting simultaneously with the vaporization of the film. The present metal casting system is especially useful for the casting of cylindrical shapes using unique molds and a novel flask is provided for such a casting process.

A method and apparatus for preparing foundry moulds or cores wherein separate charges of sand and binder on the one hand and sand and catalyst on the other hand are supplied to a mixing chamber in which the separate charges are mechanically intermixed to produce a final sand/binder/catalyst mixture. The final mixture is then passed by gravity into a blowing chamber and the mixing chamber and the blowing chamber are moved apart to allow the final mixture to be blown from the blowing chamber into a mould or core box and further to allow the mixing chamber to be cleaned by suitable cleaning means.
