Abstract: Systems and methods describe supplementing a “native controller” of an injection molding with a remote controller, via a retrofitting of the remote controller the injection molding machine. The remote controller may thereby modify control of an injection molding process based upon a control strategy of the remote controller, e.g., by providing a modified feedback signal to be used by a control algorithm of the native controller in lieu of a feedback signal previously used by the native controller. The remote controller may generate the “modified feedback signal” based upon its own control algorithm and control strategy. Furthermore, the remote controller may be configured to robustly account for behavior of the native controller so as to provide stable control of a control variable of the process according to a setpoint defined by the remote controller.

Abstract: A shrinkage detection device for a polymer injection molding apparatus detects a shrinkage experienced by an injection molded element for assessing a quality of the molded element. Shrinkage, along with temperature and pressure of the melt within the mold during cooling, indicates a sufficiency of the resulting molded element for intended purposes. Sufficiency includes parameters such as flexibility, shear strength and longevity, and is accurately performed can replace conventional sample testing of molded articles that are expensive and time consuming.

Abstract: A foam article, such as a cushioning element for an article of footwear, apparel or sporting equipment is provided that comprises a foam component, such as a midsole, having a number of beneficial physical characteristics. The cushioning element is a low-density foamed component with a surface skin that encases the remaining foam volume. The cushioning element has a number of foam volumes, arranged to achieve a more consistent foam component. Additionally, the cushioning element includes a series of concentric ridges extending radially outwardly from injection gate vestige locations, and a number of striation bands near the perimeter of the cushioning element. The location of the gate vestiges can be beneficially arranged to produce intersecting flow boundaries that are located away from key strain areas of the cushioning element. The cushioning element is more environmentally-friendly, requiring less energy to produce while still providing acceptable energy return and low density.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a timepiece element, such as an applique, to be mounted on a timepiece component, such as a dial of a timepiece, includes producing a blank of the timepiece element from an injection overmoulding of injectable material into a cavity of a mould. The cavity is defined by the association of at least one impression of a first part of the mould with a second part of the mould including an inlet orifice of the cavity for injecting the material into the cavity. The method also includes finishing the timepiece element including applying a coating on the blank of the timepiece element overmoulded on the second part, and withdrawing the finished timepiece element from the second part, which includes breaking an injection point connecting the timepiece element to the second part in preparation for mounting thereof on the timepiece component.

Abstract: An injection molding apparatus and method of fabricating a molded part are provided. The apparatus may include a barrel, a nozzle enclosing an end of the barrel and defining an opening in fluid communication with an inside of the barrel, and an extrusion screw positioned at least partially inside the barrel and rotatable relative to the barrel. The extrusion screw may include a screw tip. Relative axial movement between the barrel and the extrusion screw may open or close the opening of the nozzle to permit or prevent, respectively, material flow through the opening of the nozzle. The method may include clamping a mold, opening a nozzle, rotating the extrusion screw to pump a molten material into the mold until the mold is filled, closing the nozzle, and unclamping the mold to release a molded part.
