    摘要: The invention disclosed is a machine for projecting letters and other characters onto a strip of photographic material to form headlines and the like. The machine includes a disc having a number of concentric ring or fonts of characters which is spun at a constant high speed, a strobe light mounted on the opposite side of the disc from the paper and energized by a control circuit to project a desired character onto the paper, and a lens system for focusing the projected image. The disc and strobe assembly are slidably toward and away from the paper to vary the size of the image projected and, through a cam, move the lens to maintain proper focusing. A novel mounting arrangement maintains the optical center of the lens on the line from a reference point on the paper to a reference point on the letter to be projected so that a uniform horizontal reference line and uniform letter spacing are maintained regardless of the size of the letters projected. Vertical shifting of the font disc relative to the strobe light and the lens selects the particular font of characters to be projected. A paper drive system is incorporated to advance the paper a distance proportional to the size of the letter projected.

    摘要: The keyboard operated phototypesetting display machine produces continuous photographic paper output copy in 15 to 72 point range sizes which is top-aligned for all point sizes. A continuous rotating drum supports a font strip containing two rows of characters, timing slits, and coded data indicating the width of each of the characters. The selected characters are strobed to a magnifying lens and projected onto an image plane containing the photographic paper. The desired point sizes are obtained from individual lenses which are mounted on a rotatable lens turret which is located and locked to position a lens at a lens station by a point size selector knob. The spacing of the projected images of the characters is determined by a photoconductive pick-up which senses the character width information on the font strip and also by coded signals from the keyboard. Computer and control circuitry automatically determines the correct spacing to energize a stepping motor to escape the photographic paper. Means are provided whereby the letterspace escapement may be automatically decreased in selectable increments for all point sizes. The photographic paper is loaded at the image plane from a cassette and the output copy is received, in turn, into another cassette for easy removal from the machine. A

    摘要: The machine preferably has a character matrix comprising a rotating drum with character-bearing film strips wrapped around it. The machine has a light source comprising a plurality of flash lamps and fiber-optic light pipes. The light-pipes are arranged in a linear array aligned parallel to the direction of travel of the film strips on the drum. Photographic film is formed into a semi-cylindrical arc and remains stationary during composition of up to a full newspaper page of text before the film is moved to another exposure position. Both character spacing and line spacing are performed by a combination of selective timing of the operation of the flash lamps, a lens and reflector traveling parallel to the film in a beam of collimated light, and a swinging mirror mounted on the axis of the semi-cylinder formed by the film. Both timing slits and base-line reference marks are located on the film strips near each character. The base-line reference marks are detected and used to make automatic corrections of the character image locations to ensure excellent base-alignment of the characters on the film. Other corrections of the character image locations are stored in a memory and are made automatically during composition. Several steps are taken to ensure accurate character spacing. A separate, independent timing circuit is used to time the flashing of each character. Also, the timing is determined by reference only to the timing slit immediately next to the character to be flashed. Furthermore, timing delay is controlled by a clock pulse source whose frequency is controlled by the drum rotation so as to compensate for instantaneous variations in drum speed and/or position. Each film strip bears coded indicia indicating the illumination level required for each different type face on the strip. Automatic adjustments are made to compensate for the divergence of the collimated light towards the end of very long lines of type composition. Special means are provided to compensate for the extension of italics and slanted characters to one side or the other of the normal character area. Means also are provided for the insertion of "pi" characters and forming rules.

    摘要: The photocomposing machine is adapted to provide over eight thousand characters during operation. Characters are arranged in bands on a plurality of rotating drums, and multiple character keys and alternate keyboard displays are employed to permit selection of a specific character. Basic functional codes such as keyboard identification, type font identification, and shift identification are used to accomplish drum and band selection. A character position code is then used to locate the character in the selected band on the selected drum.A method of justification for characters such as Japanese characters is employed wherein characters of different size are segregated into two groups. The space available from the characters in the smaller sized group is employed in justification.
