Herein is provided a side fire optical device for redirecting electromagnetic radiation, methods of its manufacture, and methods of its use. The herein described side fire optical device minimizes potential Fresnel reflections at fused surfaces and eliminates Snell and Fresnel reflections in a self-contained lateral output assembly (within which a transmitting optical fiber conduit may be subsequently attached). The construction of which involved lower cost raw materials and fewer manufacturing steps; provide a side fire fiber where the protective cap can be replaced interoperatively and even intraoperatively; and provide mechanisms and processes for altering the size or shape of the output spot without altering the lateral fiber design.

The process of making synthetic silica glass occurs in a combustion chamber of a muffle furnace. It includes producing a gas flow containing a fuel, an oxidizer, and a silicon compound that is converted by flame hydrolysis and/or by chemical oxidation to SiO2 particles, and depositing them on a target to form a roll-shaped silica glass body. The combustion chamber is provided with a gas inlet and a gas outlet arranged at opposite ends of the combustion chamber, which widens from the inlet to the outlet. The gas flow is produced by a central nozzle for the silicon compound, a first concentric ring-shaped nozzle for the oxidizer, and a second concentric ring-shaped nozzle for the fuel. The process is characterized by a ratio of areas of ring gaps of the ring-shaped nozzles of from 1:4 to 1:6.1. The apparatus for the process is also part of the invention.

An optically active glass and an optical fiber comprising such glass, having reduced photodarkening properties are provided. The optically active glass is mainly composed of silica representing from about 50 to 98 mol % of the glass. It also includes at least one active ion, such as a rear-earth ion, which induces a photodarkening effect in optical properties of the glass. Moreover, the glass includes an effective amount of phosphorus oxide providing the photodarkening reducing effect, preferably in an amount of from about 1 to 30 mol %. A method for reducing a photodarkening effect in optical properties of an optically active glass including the step of introducing phosphorus oxide to the glass is also provided.
