A sintered dense glass, alumina-doped optical fiber preform is stretched and is then heated to a temperature of 1490-1495° C. to remove bubbles without causing crystallization. Thereafter, the stretched glass body is either drawn directly into an optical fiber or overclad and then drawn into a fiber.

The present invention is directed to a fluorinated rare earth doped glass composition and method for making a glass-ceramic optical article therefrom, e.g. optical fiber waveguides, fiber lasers and active fiber amplifiers, having application in the 1300 nm and 1550 nm telecommunications windows. The inventive compositions include Pr3+ and/or Dy3+ in a concentration range of between 300-2,000 ppmw and Ag+ in a concentration range of between 500-2000 ppmw; or Er3+ in a concentration range of between 500-5,000 ppmw and Ag+ in a concentration range of between 0-2,000 ppmw. The monovalent silver ion provides an ionic charge balanced glass-ceramic crystal. These compositions exhibit reduced or absent rare earth ion clustering and fluorescence quenching effects in the presence of high concentrations of rare earth ion dopants.

A method and device for reducing the temperature of an optical fiber wherein a housing body is provided a plurality of inner cooling chambers which are-, partitioned from each other by a plurality of partition walls. An axial through hole extends through each of the inner cooling chambers from an upper end of the housing body to a lower end of the housing body for the axial passage of an optical fiber therethough. A plurality of gas injection holes corresponding to the inner cooling chambers are provided in a side wall of the housing body for injecting gas into the inner cooling chambers. A plurality of coolant pipes through which a liquid coolant is circulated extend through each of the inner cooling chambers from the upper end to the lower end of the housing body. The coolant pipes are disposed between the gas injection holes and the axial through hole so that the gas which is injected into the inner cooling chambers via the gas injection holes is not blown directly against the fiber.

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for cooling an optical fiber during the drawing process of said fiber. In particular the present method for cooling an optical fiber comprises flowing a cooling gas onto the optical fiber wherein the flow direction of the cooling gas is substantially transversal with respect the longitudinal axis of the fiber. It has been found that by employing a flow of cooling gas being substantially transversal to the longitudinal axis of the drawn fiber, the cooling efficiency of the fiber may be substantially improved. The apparatus according to the invention comprises a hollow elongated body, said hollow elongated body having at least one wall defining an internal elongated space through which the drawn fiber passes wherein the at least one wall of said hollow elongated body is provided with at least one longitudinal opening through which a cooling gas is introduced into the hollow body and at least one longitudinal opening through which said cooling gas is removed from said hollow body.

A reduced dispersion optical waveguide and methods of fabricating the same are implemented. The optical waveguide may be fabricated in commercially practicable units without having to predetermine its length in a particular application. The reduced dispersion optical waveguide prevents optical pulse overlap in optical waveguide transmission systems operating over long distances or at high data rates.
