Abstract: An aqueous polyelectrolyte (PEC) composition for application to a fibre based material for use in obtaining a barrier coating resistant to oil and water, comprises from 0.1 to 20% (w/w) of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and from 0.1 to 20% of cationic starch (CS), providing PECs with a charge ratio of ≤1; from 1 to 20% (w/w) of a plasticizer; and from 1 to 15% (w/w) of a pH adjusting agent selected from an acid, a buffering system and a base.

Abstract: The present invention relates generally to compositions comprising polyelectrolytes complexes (PECs) of anionic and cationic biopolymers capable of forming barriers on fiber based materials. Also disclosed is a fibre based material with a barrier coating against oil and water, wherein the material is provided with a barrier from at least two layers formed from at least one composition comprising a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) of a cationic biopolymer and an anionic biopolymer, The two layers result in improvements in both oil resistance and water resistance compared to the same material provided with a single layer of said at least one composition.

Abstract: A method of making a package including forming a moisture barrier coated paper material that includes a moisture barrier coated paper material including a base substrate, a first polymer coating, a second polymer coating, and a third polymer coating, the first polymer coating, the second polymer coating, and the third polymer coating applied over a first side of the base substrate, the first polymer coating, the second polymer coating, and the third polymer coating providing a barrier for moisture and air exchange through the paper material, the first polymer coating, the second polymer coating, and the third polymer coating providing heat and pressure sealability capabilities to the paper material, cutting a packaging blank from the paper material; folding the packaging blank into the package, and sealing the package by providing heat and pressure to overlapped portions of the paper material.

Abstract: An oil-resistant agent for paper, which contains a non-fluorine copolymer that has a repeating unit formed from (a) an acrylic monomer having a long-chain hydrocarbon group with 7-40 carbon atoms and a repeating unit formed from (b) an acrylic monomer having a hydrophilic group. The oil-resistant agent for paper also contains a liquid medium that is composed of water and/or an organic solvent, preferably of water or a mixture (aqueous medium) of water and an organic solvent. The non-fluorine copolymer preferably has a repeating unit formed from (c) a monomer having an ion donor group in addition to the repeating units formed from the monomers (a) and (b). Also disclosed is an oil-resistant paper having an oil-resistant layer including the oil-resistant agent for paper, and starch or modified starch, on a surface of the paper as well as a method of treating paper.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to omniphobic coatings, related articles including such coatings, and related method for forming such coatings or articles, for example biobased and/or biodegradable omniphobic coatings with high barrier properties. The omniphobic coating includes an oleophobic and hydrophilic first layer, and a hydrophobic and optionally oleophilic second layer adjacent to the first layer. A corresponding omniphobic coated article can include the omniphobic coating on a substrate such as a porous cellulosic or paper substrate, for example to provide a water- and oil/fat/grease-resistant coating for a paper-based product. The first layer of the omniphobic coating is adjacent to the substrate and the second layer is adjacent to the first layer at a position further from the substrate than the first layer. The omniphobic coating can be applied to a substrate in a layer-by-layer process, and the coated article can be recycled by extraction to remove the coating and recover the substrate material, for example in a re-pulping process.

Abstract: Described herein are blends of carbohydrate-based polymeric materials with other polymeric materials, where the carbohydrate-based polymeric material is intimately blended with the other polymeric material, so as to exhibit very small particles sizes (e.g., less than 2 μm, or less than 1 μm) for the carbohydrate-based polymeric material in the matrix of the other polymeric material. Such intimate dispersion of very small particles provides for far more of the particles dispersed more evenly throughout the matrix of the other polymeric material, which may enhance various performance characteristics of the blended composite material, and provide for more consistent achievement of such characteristics, from batch to batch. Methods of producing articles from such blends exhibiting such small particles and excellent dispersion are also disclosed. While suitable for use in a wide variety of fields, examples may include for the coating of paper cups, and as a capsule material for sustained release fertilizer.

Abstract: Described are bonding modulating coatings configured to provide an improved release profile of a volatile composition from a scent reservoir, wherein the modulating coating includes a barrier substance configured to hinder the release of the volatile composition through the modulating coating. The modulating coating also includes a hygroscopic substance that facilitates the release of the volatile composition through the modulating coating. The barrier substance and hygroscopic substance are mixed in a proportion such that the modulating coating provides a bonding action between adjacent scent reservoirs and may be formulated to maintain bonding even under the application of heat. The bonding modulating coating may then be used to bond a number of scent reservoirs together into a larger, three-dimensional matrix to provide improved scent retention and longevity.
