Abstract: The present invention relates to an article and a method for its preparation; the article comprises a cured polymeric film superposing paper or paperboard. The polymeric film is derived from a dispersion which comprises: a) a dispersant which is a copolymer with an acid value of 130 or less, comprising structural units of ethylene and a carboxylic acid monomer, wherein the copolymer has a melt flow index in the range of from 50 to 2000 g/10 min at 190° C./2.16 kg; wherein the weight-to-weight ratio of structural units of ethylene to carboxylic acid monomer is in the range of from 95:5 to 70:30; and wherein the dispersant has a concentration in the range of from 9 to 50 weight percent based on the weight of polymer solids in the dispersion; b) a base polymer comprising non-functionalized ethylene-co-alkene copolymers, wherein the weight-to-weight ratio of the structural units of ethylene to alkene is in the range of from 99.8:0.2 to 50:50; and c) a neutralizing agent which is a hard base and excludes an organic base having a boiling point of less than 250° C.; wherein the concentration of the neutralizing agent is sufficient to neutralize at least half of the carboxylic acid groups associated with the dispersion composition. The article of the present invention is useful as a barrier to a wide range of hydrophobic and hydrophilic materials.

Abstract: A method for producing a sheet of paper or cardboard from a fibrous suspension, includes injection of a polymer P2 into a fibrous suspension, forming of a sheet of paper or cardboard, and drying the sheet of paper or cardboard. The polymer P2 is prepared, before injection of the polymer P2, from a water-soluble polymer P1 in the form of solid particles. Polymer P1 consists of at least one nonionic monomer selected from acrylamide, methacrylamide, N,N-dimethylacrylamide, and acrylonitrile. Polymer P1 is subjected to a reaction Re to yield polymer P2. The reaction Re includes the addition and the dissolution of solid particles of polymer P1 in an aqueous solution M1 of an alkali hydroxide and/or an alkaline earth hydroxide, and an alkali hypohalide and/or an alkaline earth hypohalide, prior to a reaction time of 10 seconds to 5 hours.

Abstract: The disclosure provides an associative polymer, a powder, a process for forming a paper sheet, and a process for making a powder. One or more associative polymers and one or more optional surfactants may be networked to form a wet gel and a powder may be formed from the wet gel. The associative polymer may have a weight average molecular weight of from about 10 kDa to about 2,000 kDa. A method may involve adding the powder to a cellulose fiber slurry, draining the cellulose fiber slurry to form a fiber pad, and drying the fiber pad to form a paper sheet.

Abstract: The invention relates to a fibrous mat facer for preparing a gypsum board, to a gypsum board comprising said mat facer and to a system comprising said gypsum board. The fibrous mat comprises at least one ply of a non-woven fabric, and a binder composition, wherein the binder composition represents from 10 to 40 wt % of the total weight of the mat. The binder composition comprises a copolymer comprising a co-monomer unit of a vinyl ester of an alpha branched aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, said copolymer being present in an amount from 25 to 100 wt % of the binder composition weight.

Abstract: The invention relates to a transfer material for dye sublimation processes, comprising a base paper, which is coated on one side with a color-receiving layer, wherein the base paper contains at least 1.5% by weight, based on the mass of the pulp, of a polymer dispersion selected from the group consisting of polyacrylates, polyesters, polyolefins or mixtures thereof. The invention further relates to a process for producing a transfer material according to the invention, comprising the steps of: (a) producing a base paper on a paper machine, wherein at least 1.5% by weight, based on the mass of the pulp, of a polymer dispersion selected from the group consisting of polyacrylates, polyesters, polyolefins or mixtures thereof are added to the pulp suspension during production of the base paper; (b) drying and smoothing the base paper; (c) applying the color-receiving layer to a surface of the base paper; and (d) drying the transfer material obtained in step (c). The invention further relates to a process for transferring an image onto a receiving material by sublimation, wherein a transfer material according to the invention is printed with an image by way of the inkjet printing process, and the image is transferred onto a receiving material by sublimation.

Abstract: An oil-resistant agent for paper, which contains a non-fluorine copolymer that has a repeating unit formed from (a) an acrylic monomer having a long-chain hydrocarbon group with 7-40 carbon atoms and a repeating unit formed from (b) an acrylic monomer having a hydrophilic group. The oil-resistant agent for paper also contains a liquid medium that is composed of water and/or an organic solvent, preferably of water or a mixture (aqueous medium) of water and an organic solvent. The non-fluorine copolymer preferably has a repeating unit formed from (c) a monomer having an ion donor group in addition to the repeating units formed from the monomers (a) and (b). Also disclosed is an oil-resistant paper having an oil-resistant layer including the oil-resistant agent for paper, and starch or modified starch, on a surface of the paper as well as a method of treating paper.
