Abstract: A method of controlling an idle speed of an engine of a vehicle, includes the steps of determining that the engine is decelerating to or is operating at a nominal idle speed, determining that a vehicle brake is applied, determining an actual or projected electrical load of at least part of a vehicle electrical system is beyond an electrical load threshold, and increasing the engine speed to or maintaining the speed of the engine at a speed greater than the nominal idle speed range as a function of the electrical load to increase the electrical output of a generator coupled to the engine. The method may include determining that the brake is ceasing to be applied and then decreasing the engine speed to or toward the nominal idle speed.

Abstract: When selecting cylinders of a multi-cylinder diesel engine in an engine system for cylinder deactivation (CDA), a method can comprise designating a first resonance around a first periodic frequency output of the engine system as a primary boundary and designating a second resonance around a second periodic frequency output of the engine system as a secondary boundary. Selecting cylinders can comprise selecting one of half, one third, or two thirds of the multiple cylinders for CDA while firing the remaining multiple cylinders. The selection can be made so that the periodic frequency output of the engine is between the primary and secondary boundaries. A compact periodic frequency band can be implemented to further restrict the selection of cylinders for CDA. The first periodic frequency output can be about 15 Hertz+/−1.5 Hertz and the second periodic frequency output can be between 30-40 Hertz+/−1.5 Hertz.

When the vehicle is stopped and the removal of deposits is required, and the forced charging of the power storage device is not being performed, the controller controls the fuel supply device so that the supply fuel pressure is at a third fuel pressure higher than the first fuel pressure and lower than the second fuel pressure.

Abstract: A hydrogen fueled powerplant including an internal combustion engine that drives a motor-generator, and has a two-stage turbocharger, for an aircraft. A control system controls the operation of the motor-generator to maintain the engine at a speed selected based on controlling the engine equivalence ratio. The control system controls an afterburner, an intercooler and an aftercooler to maximize powerplant efficiency. The afterburner also adds power to the turbochargers during high-altitude restarts. The turbochargers also include motor-generators that extract excess power from the exhaust.
