Abstract: A hybrid power generation system in one embodiment comprises a green boiler containing a thermal mass composition operable to store thermal energy, a solar energy collection system which absorbs solar energy to heat a first working fluid and in turn the thermal mass composition, and a power generation system comprising a steam turbine coupled to an electric generator to produce electricity and a nuclear steam supply system which convert a second working fluid comprising water from liquid to steam. Steam output by the nuclear steam supply system flows through the green boiler and is heated by absorbing heat from the thermal mass composition to increase the enthalpy of the steam and concomitantly electric power output from the turbine-generator. The nuclear steam supply system and green boiler may be retrofit to replace existing fossil fuel steam generation systems while retaining the energy conversion part of the fossil power plant.

Abstract: A solar power generation system includes a thermal energy storage vessel containing a thermal mass composition operable to store thermal energy, solar energy collection system, and power generation system. The collection system comprises a first closed flow loop including a solar collector which absorbs solar energy and heats a first working fluid. The heated first working fluid recirculates through a first closed flow loop through and heats the thermal mass composition. The generation system comprises a second closed flow loop including a turbine-generator. The second closed flow loop recirculates a second working fluid through the thermal mass composition to absorb thermal energy and heat the second working fluid which flows to the turbine and the generator produces electricity. The second working fluid may be water/steam or a compressible gas. The thermal mass composition comprises a mixture of a phase change material such as salt and a metallic material.

Abstract: An energy storage system (TES) converts variable renewable electricity (VRE) to continuous heat at over 1000° C. Intermittent electrical energy heats a solid medium. Heat from the solid medium is delivered continuously on demand. Heat delivery via flowing gas establishes a thermocline which maintains high outlet temperature throughout discharge. The delivered heat which may be used for processes including power generation and cogeneration. In one application, the energy storage system provides higher-temperature heat to a solid oxide electrolysis system to maintain in an electrolysis operating temperature range during operation and nonoperation, thereby increasing the efficiency of the temperature control.

Abstract: A pumped storage hydroelectric system may include a reservoir system including an upper reservoir system and a lower reservoir system. At least one of the upper reservoir system and the lower reservoir system may include a modular reservoir arrangement. A penstock may be coupled with the upper reservoir system. A pump/turbine may be coupled with the penstock and with the lower reservoir system. The pump/turbine may be configured to receive water flowing from the upper reservoir system to the lower reservoir system for generating electrical power, and to pump water from the lower reservoir system to the upper reservoir system for storing energy.

Abstract: According to examples of the disclosure there is provided a heat-driven pumping system and a method of pumping. The heat-driven pumping system comprises a closed circuit for a first liquid. The closed circuit comprises a vaporization portion. The vaporization portion is configured to receive heat from an external source. The vaporization portion is configured to cause vaporization of first liquid within the vaporization portion. Vaporization of first liquid within the vaporization portion thereby increases an amount of gas in the closed circuit. The closed circuit is sealed such that the increase in the amount of gas increases a pressure exerted on the first liquid. The heat-driven pumping system comprises a transfer means. The transfer means is configured to convert the pressure exerted on the first liquid into a pumping force. The pumping force is transferred to a pumping vessel for pumping a second liquid.

Abstract: A light turbine, turbine, and turbine housing are described, in which the turbine housing can include a main housing and a chimney. The main housing and chimney define a circular path within which vanes located on the ends of spokes can move. Movement of the vanes can cause rotation of a shaft attached to the spokes. The chimney can be removably attached to the main housing to allow access to the vanes, which can be removably attached to the spokes. The turbine housing and turbine can be configured such that various compositions and/or configurations of vanes can be evaluated in conjunction with one or more forms of energy sources, such as an electromagnetic radiation source. The turbine housing can enable selective evaluation within ambient air, a partial vacuum, and/or the like.
