    Abstract: A tension link for use in downhole operations. The tension link has a link body connecting two features, such as a backreamer and product pipe, which are towed through a borehole. The tension link has electronics which can monitor the tension in the link body. The electronics may include a Bluetooth radio or similar device, which uses a power source to send a low power signal including the tension data to a beacon, which is located in a separate cavity of the tension link. The beacon encodes received information about tension onto a stronger electromagnetic field. This electromagnetic field may, in turn, be used to power the electronics. No direct link between the electronics and the beacon exists, and the beacon may be used in other downhole operations other than tension monitoring, such as directional drilling. The electromagnetic field signal is detected at a receiving antenna at an uphole location.

    Abstract: In a particular embodiment, a force sensor apparatus is disclosed that includes a force-compliant element that deforms in response to applications of forces to the force sensor apparatus. The force sensor apparatus also includes a sensing element coupled to an upper region of the force-compliant element and configured to generate one or more signals indicating an amount that the force-compliant element deforms in response to the application of forces to the force sensor apparatus. The force-compliant element has a bottom region that includes a force-receiving surface and an outer region surrounding the force-receiving surface. In this example embodiment, the outer region is substantially level. In a particular embodiment, the outer region is absent any grooves. Alternatively, the outer region may have one or more small grooves.

    Abstract: A sensor sheet (20) includes an insulator sheet (21) made of an elastomer; a detection electrode (22) made of an elastomer that includes a conductive material and disposed on an upper surface of the insulator sheet (21); a first bypass conductor (23) disposed on an upper surface of the detection electrode (22) and extending in a longitudinal direction corresponding to a direction of a central axis (14) of a core material (15); a first lead wire (28) associated with the detection electrode (22); and a first wiring conductor (24) disposed between the first bypass conductor (23) and the first lead wire (28), spaced apart from the first bypass conductor (23), and electrically connected to the detection electrode (22). One end (24A) of the first wiring conductor (24) is electrically connected in a state of contact with the first lead wire (28), and the other end (24B) of the first wiring conductor (24) is spaced apart from the first bypass conductor (23) with a first end portion gap (41) therebetween.

    Abstract: A calibration system including a stage, a weighting jig, a parallel link mechanism, and a control apparatus is provided. A weighted body includes a force sensor configured to output a value based on a load value including at least a component in one axial direction among components in six axial directions of a load applied to the weighted body, and a master sensor calibrated to output the load value according to the load. The parallel link mechanism includes output parts corresponding to the six rods, respectively. The six rods are connected in parallel to the weighting jig. The control apparatus is configured to control an output of each of the output parts, relatively displace the weighting jig with respect to the stage, and calibrate the force sensor on the basis of the value output from the force sensor and the load value output from the master sensor.

    Abstract: A strain gauge has a mounting structure for mounting to a portion being measured. A base member of the strain gauge is partly fixed, by an adhesive, to the portion being measured. The base member includes a first base portion and a second base portion that are mutually separately positioned in a longitudinal direction, a resistance element being provided in the first base portion and a terminal being provided in the second base portion. The first base portion is fixed by a layer of adhesive to the portion being measured, and the layer of the adhesive is not provided on the second base portion such that the second base portion is not fixed to the portion being measured.
