Abstract: System and method for determining distributed birefringence variations in a polarization-maintaining optical fiber (PM fiber). The method includes causing a pump signal to be sent into the PM fiber to generate a Brillouin dynamic grating (BDG) therein, causing a first chirped probe optical pulse to be sent into the PM fiber, receiving a first reflected signal, the first reflected signal being a first portion of the first chirped probe optical pulse reflected by the BDG, receiving a second reflected signal, the second reflected signal being a second portion of the first chirped probe optical pulse reflected by the BDG, and determining a variation of birefringence of the PM fiber indicative of a variation of physical disturbance of the PM fiber between times of reflections on the BDG of the first and second reflected signals.

Abstract: An optical sub-assembly with OTDR filter includes a plug-in unit and a sending/receiving unit. The sending/receiving unit includes a main body surrounding an axis, an upstream transmitter, an isolator, a first filter, a second filter and a downstream receiver. The plug-in unit includes a housing, a fiber stub, a sleeve, a stopper and an OTDR filter. The OTDR optical reflector (OTDR filter) is installed inside the optical sub-assembly, it saves space and costs by omitting the conventional FBG and can achieve the same effect as reflecting the OTDR monitoring light.

Abstract: A method for determining the shape of an optical waveguide (1) having a plurality of fiber Bragg gratings (15) includes the following steps: coupling light (20) of a light source (2) into the optical waveguide (1), coupling the reflected light out of the optical waveguide (1), determining a spectrum (35) of the reflected light by measuring the intensity (I) versus the wavelength (λ), the spectrum (35) being fed to a self-learning neural network (4) and the shape of the optical waveguide (1) being determined by the neural network. A device for determining the shape of an optical waveguide (1) may be used in a catheter or an endoscope or a biopsy needle or an aerodynamic profiled element. A device for producing training data for a neural network to implement the above is also contemplated.

Abstract: Disclosed herein an apparatus and method for estimating a phase retarder and method of manufacturing the phase retarder using the same. The apparatus includes: a polarization element configured to output an incident light as a linear polarization and to make the linear polarization incident onto a phase retarder to be tested; a polarization image acquisition module equipped with a plurality of polarized pixels receiving an emitting light that is output from the phase retarder, on which the linear polarization is incident, and configured to obtain a polarization image based on the emitting light that is modulated in the polarized pixels; and a processor configured to evaluate quality of the phase retarder based on uniformity of a brightness value between polarized pixels of the polarization image. The polarized pixels modulate the emitting light based on a plurality of transmission angles and detects the modulated emitting light.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention include an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) device having a transmitter for transmitting a series of optical pulses, a processor for controlling the duration and frequency of the transmitted optical pulses, an optical coupler for directing the transmitted optical pulses to a device under test coupled to the OTDR and receiving light reflected back from the device under test, a detector for converting light reflected back from the device under test to an electrical signal, a display for displaying a plot of the electrical signal, and a gating function device for removing at least one saturation event from the light reflected back from the device under test. The operation of the gating function device is controlled by a gating signal provided by the processor to the gating function device. The gating signal is based on at least one characteristic of the saturation event.

One method may include launching a plurality of probe pulses from a probe source; recording a Brillouin scattering spectrum from a plurality of reflection signals generated in the optical fiber, responsive to the plurality of probe pulses; determining a relative motion between the optical fiber and the anomaly during the recording the Brillouin back-scattering spectrum; and dynamically adjusting the Brillouin back-scattering spectrum according to the relative motion, or performing an adjustment of the Brillouin back-scattering spectrum after acquisition of the Brillouin back-scattering spectrum.
