Abstract: In an example, a method includes producing a set of projected sample characterization values associated with each of a plurality of processing axes and identifying a preferred processing axis based on the projected sample characterization values. In another representative example, a method includes extracting a sample specimen, producing a sample image of the sample specimen, identifying a preferred sample tilt angle, and rotating the sample specimen to an orientation corresponding to a preferred sample tilt angle. The method further includes processing the sample specimen to produce a lamella. In another representative example, a system includes a focused ion beam (FIB) system, a sample holder, a stage, and a controller operable to cause the stage to rotate the sample specimen relative to the ion beam axis such that the ion beam approaches the sample specimen along a preferred processing axis.

Abstract: A light control device including a light control sheet including a light control layer switchable between at least a first state and a second state by changing alignment of liquid crystal molecules by application of a drive voltage, and transparent electrode layers sandwiching the light control layer. The light control layer is transparent in the first state and turbid in the second state. The light control layer is in the second state when there is no application of the drive voltage. When the light control layer is in the second state, the light control sheet has a transmitted image definition of 70% or less, where the transmitted image definition is based on JIS K 7374:2007 with an optical comb width set to 0.125 mm.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a method for determining an ore-forming environment of a porphyry deposit based on a tourmaline component, including the following steps: collecting a tourmaline-containing rock in the porphyry deposit to obtain a rock sample; performing pretreatment on the rock sample to obtain a treated sample; performing an in-situ tourmaline trace element test on the treated sample to obtain a test result; performing data processing and interpretation on the test result to obtain tourmaline trace element data; establishing a discrimination factor based on the tourmaline trace element data; and determining the ore-forming environment based on the discrimination factor. The present disclosure can quickly recognize a forming environment of a newly discovered porphyry deposit, thereby summarizing a rule and quickly giving guidance for a next prospecting direction.

Abstract: The present application relates generally to image tiling, including but not limited to systems and methods of fast whole slide tissue tiling. A computing system may identify a first image of a first dimension from which to select one or more tiles. The computing system may perform a reduction operation on the first image to generate a second image of a second dimension. The computing system may apply a thresholding operation on the second image to identify a first set of pixels corresponding to the presence of the feature and a second set of pixels corresponding to the absence of the feature based on an intensity of each pixel in the second image. The computing system may select, from a plurality of tiles corresponding to the first image, a subset of tiles corresponding to the first set of pixels identified from the second image.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for faster pathology are provided that removes the need for time consuming preparation of a hardened tissue block. Such hardening is necessary to enable cutting of the thin tissue sections required for pathology evaluation. Rather the tissue specimen is hardened by freezing only at the surface from which tissue is to be sectioned by contact with a cold surface or slide thereby lessening the time required for hardening. Sectioning is performed by passing a cutting member such as a blade, cutting wire or laser along a plane parallel to the cold surface and using the cold surface as a guide.

A profile of the content of undesirable elements can thus be obtained without the subjective aspect of human checking, which profile is representative of a content obtained by acquiring diffraction of X-rays produced using a synchrotron.
