Abstract: A variable magnification optical system that comprises a first lens group having negative refractive power, a first intermediate lens group having positive refractive power, a second intermediate lens group, and a rear lens group having at least one focusing lens group which is moved upon carrying out focusing from an infinitely distant object to a closely distant object. The variable magnification optical system is constructed such that, upon varying a magnification from a wide angle end state to a telephoto end state, the first lens group is moved along the optical axis, a distance between the first lens group and the first intermediate lens group is varied, a distance between the first intermediate lens group and the second intermediate lens group is varied, a distance between the second intermediate lens group and the rear lens group is varied, and predetermined conditional expressions are satisfied.

Abstract: An axicon scatter filter assembly operates on light that is approximately temporally and spatially coherent (requiring either active illumination or a very narrow field of view). The filter exploits the difference in behavior between spatially coherent and spatially incoherent light. Spatially coherent light is shaped and moved by the axicons. This allows the spatially coherent light to diverge and then be reconstructed into a rectified image. The spatially incoherent light is neither shaped nor moved by the axicons. Where the coherent light diverges, the incoherent (scattered) light does not. Thus, masks can be used to block a portion of the incoherent light while passing all of the incoherent light. The filter assembly thus removes undesired scattered light that degrades image quality. The axicons then reconstruct the original image with less scattering, which can be imaged by a lens and camera.

Abstract: Disclosed is a viewing angle control film including a transparent substrate and a plurality of first optical microstructures. The first optical microstructures are disposed on a surface of the transparent substrate, and a disposed range thereof has a geometric center. Each of the first optical microstructures has a first refracting surface away from the geometric center. First refracting angles included between the respective first refracting surfaces of the first optical microstructures and the surface of the transparent substrate are asymmetrically distributed with respect to the geometric center. A display apparatus adopting the viewing angle control film is also provided.

Abstract: A light absorption anisotropic layer, manufacturing thereof, a laminate and an image display device. The layer contains a dichroic substance and a liquid crystal compound, in which, when, in an X-ray diffraction pattern measurement using an in-plane diffraction method with X-ray irradiation, diffracted X-rays are measured in a measurement region of a rotation angle φ in in-plane direction of light absorption anisotropic layer: 0° to 180° and a diffraction angle 2θ:0° to 10° to determine a diffraction angle 2θmax and a rotation angle φmax at which a peak intensity is maximized, a peak intensity of diffracted X-rays at the diffraction angle 2θmax and the rotation angle φmax is represented by I(φmax), and a peak intensity of diffracted X-rays at the diffraction angle 2θmax and the rotation angle φmax−10° is represented by I(φmax−10), a relationship expressed by Expression (1) I(φmax)/I(φmax−10)≥1.6 is satisfied.
