Before starting the regular display in a liquid crystal display device of the bend alignment type, it is necessary to transition all the pixel regions in the entire display portion uniformly from splay alignment into bend alignment. However, conventionally, when applying a simple ac voltage, the transition sometimes does not take place, and when it does take place, the transition time is very long, and display defects due to alignment defects tend to occur. In the method for driving a liquid crystal display device with OCB cells according to the present invention, a step of applying between an electrode 22 and a pixel electrode 23 an ac voltage superimposed with a bias voltage, and a step of applying zero voltage or a low voltage to the substrates are repeated in alternation preceding the begin of the regular display operation and the regular display operation is carried out after all pixels have transitioned into bend alignment.

In accordance with the principles disclosed, a direct-view liquid crystal display (LCD) includes a front substantially transparent substrate, a rear substrate, and a controllable cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) disposed between the front and rear substrates and having a characteristic wavelength to reflect non-visible spectrum; the portions of the controllable CLC can selectively exhibit a planar state or a focal-conic state, the portions of the CLC in the planar state appearing dark, and the portions of the CLC in the focal-conic state appearing bright, to an observer of the LCD. The reflective, transmissive and reflective-transmissive mode displays are derived by further combinations with linear and/or circular polarizers, reflective mirrors and/or transmissive/reflective mirrors, and a source of visible light.

A liquid crystal display device includes cell wall structure and a chiral nematic liquid crystal material. The cell wall structure and the liquid crystal cooperate to form focal conic and twisted planar textures that are stable in the absence of a field. A device applies an electric field to the liquid crystal for transforming at least a portion of the material to at least one of the focal conic and twisted planar textures. The liquid crystal material has a pitch length effective to reflect radiation having a wavelength in both the visible and the infrared ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum at intensity that is sufficient for viewing by an observer. One liquid crystal material may be disposed in a single region or two or more liquid crystal materials may be used, each in separate regions even without the infrared reflecting layer. One aspect of the invention is directed to a photolithography method for patterning a substrate of the display. The display may also have multicolor capabilities by including separate layers of at least two or three liquid crystal materials that reflect visible light. A full color stacked display may be produced with grey scale capabilities.

The present invention uses a liquid crystal display material comprising a polymer in which a liquid crystal is dispersed in a dissolvable state or a phase separable state, wherein the liquid crystal dissolves in the polymer at high temperatures and separates from the polymer at low temperatures, and a contrast ratio (B/A) of a reflectance (A) of the display material cooled from the dissolution state at a rate of 10° C./sec and a reflectance (B) of the display material cooled from the dissolution state at a rate of 4° C./sec is not less than 2. The image forming state can be maintained by controlling the cooling rate from the dissolution state to maintain the liquid crystal in translucent state.
