The method comprises shredding the photographic film into a plurality of fragments to be processed; swelling the fragments to be processed formed in the shredding step by dipping each of these fragments to be processed into hot water; and drying the fragments to be processed swollen in the swelling step by applying an impact frictional striking force to each of these fragments to be processed, peeling layers other than a resin material base of the photographic film, i.e., a protective coat, an emulsion layer, and a base coat layer, from each fragment to be processed and classifying these layers, and grading the resin material base so as to be resin material to be recovered.

The present invention is recyclable photographic film base which includes a cellulose acetate support. An antistatic layer is superposed on one side of the support and includes an antistatic agent. A barrier layer comprising a polymeric composition having a glass transition temperature of less than 90.degree. C. overlies the antistatic layer. In a preferred embodiment the polymeric composition of the barrier layer in poly(isobutyl methacrylate).

Spent photographic film having at least a polyester base, blue dye, and a polyvinylidene binder layer, and from which the photographic emulsion has been removed, is treated to recover usable polyester. The spent photographic film is heated in cyclohexanone at a temperature sufficient and for a time sufficient to remove both polyvinylidene and dye compounds from the polyester base. The recovered polyester may then be mixed with virgin polyester and extruded to produce a polyester product comprising in part recovered polyester and in part virgin polyester.

The invention concerns a method of treating effluents in order to eliminate the organic compounds. The method comprises a primary oxidation stage with hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline medium, a secondary oxidation stage in a neutral medium and a subsequent absorption stage. The effluent thus treated can be discharged directly to drain. The invention can be applied in particular to effluents originating from photographic development baths.

A method of treating photographic processing wastes is disclosed. The method comprises (1) mixing a silver-recovery system waste and a development system waste from photographic processing to produce a waste mixture, (2) adding to said waste mixture phosphorus as a nutritive substrate in an amount corresponding to at least 2% based on the COD value of the waste mixture, and (3) subjecting the resulting waste mixture to a bio-oxidation treatment using microflora containing sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. The method enables a continuously treatment of high concentration photographic processing wastes with high efficiency over a long period of time.

An improved canister for the recovery of silver from acidic, waste fluids is described. This canister comprises both inner and outer element, each removable from the other, with fitted top and bottom sections. The novel canister thus described, provides a rapid flow of waste material through the system and is efficient and easy to use and manufacture than prior art elements. Plugging of the canisters due to intermittent use is also reduced in the element of this invention.

A method for the recovery of silver from photographic film having a polyester base and a macromolecular organic polymer coating to which is adhered a light sensitive silver emulsion layer. The process includes mixing small film pieces in a hot aqueous liquid having a solids concentration level of at least 25 percent by volume. The mixture is subjected to conditions of high shear to remove the silver emulsion. The liquid containing the silver emulsion is then separated from the film pieces and the silver is recovered from the liquid.

The method of the present invention is directed to the recovery of silver from spent photographic fixer solutions and for providing an effluent essentially silver-free that is suitable for discharge into commercial sewage systems. The present method involves the steps of introducing the spent photographic fixer solution into an alkaline hypochlorite solution. The oxidizing conditions of the alkaline hypochlorite solution are maintained during the addition of the fixer solution so that the silver ion complexing agents of thiosulfate and sulfite ions are effectively destroyed. Hydrazine monohydrate is then added to the oxidizing solution to form a reducing solution to effect the formation of a precipitate of silver which can be readily removed by filtration or decanting. Experimental tests indicate that greater than 99.99% of the original silver in the spent photographic fixer can be efficiently removed by practicing the present method. Also, the chemical and biological oxygen demand of the remaining effluent is significantly reduced so as to permit the discharge thereof into sewage systems at levels in compliance with federal and state environmental standards.
