An engine automatic stop and start system monitors a booster negative pressure and a braking operation. A combination of the booster negative pressure and the brake operation can effectively indicate that a booster negative pressure will be insufficient to ensure a brake function. The controller evaluates the booster negative pressure and the brake operation, and restarts the engine when it is estimated that the booster negative pressure may be decreased below a threshold. As a result, it is possible to restart the engine before the booster negative pressure is decreased.

Between a computer (19) and an end stage (3) for triggering the starting relay (4), a memory circuit (2) is connected to a locking circuit (1), which in the event of undervoltage of the battery (20) maintains the status at a control input STEN during the voltage dip. A computer (19) which has entered a reset mode during the voltage dip is reactivated after the termination of the voltage dip and controls the locking circuit (1) in such a way that the starting relay (4) now continues to be triggered via the control input STEN. To obtain a defined outset state of the flip-flop (14, 15) upon reconnection of the battery, an RC member is disposed in the memory circuit.

A compression release brake system for an internal combustion engine is selectively operable in different modes that provide lower levels of noise emissions at lower levels of vehicle retarding. Lower noise levels are achieved by advancing or otherwise modulating the timing of brake events, thereby reducing cylinder pressure during release and thus reducing noise levels. A system is provided on board the vehicle to determine when the vehicle is operating in a noise restricted region and automatically switch to a braking mode that produces lower, acceptable levels of noise emissions. GPS or other sensors may be used to determine when the vehicle is operating in a restricted region.

The processing unit executes various processing routines while accessing the memory in a predetermined access speed or wait-time. The routines include a rotation interrupt routine which is initiated in synchronized relation with a rotation of an engine. The memory access speed of the processing unit is set initially to a low speed, when an ignition switch is turned on to start a power supply to the processing unit. However, it is changed to a high access speed, when a rotation speed of the engine increases and a rate of execution of the interrupt routine by the processing unit increases.

A running resistance increment, i.e., an increase of running resistance from a standard running resistance, is calculated. A preliminary driving force correction is determined in response to the running resistance increment. The preliminary driving force correction is subjected to variation. The preceding old value of a driving force correction is subtracted from a current value of the preliminary driving force to give a variation in driving force correction. This variation is limited to fall in a range between an upper and a lower limit to give a limited driving force correction variation. The preceding old value of the driving force correction is added to the limited driving force correction variation to give the driving force correction. This driving force correction is added to the ordinary target driving force to give a corrected target driving force. To realize the corrected target driving force, engine torque and CVT ratio are adjusted.
