Abstract: A method is provided for controlling traffic management infrastructure, comprising: capturing images of vehicle license plates converting the images into license plate data including license plate characters; transmitting the license plate data to a central server having a data collection module, a data anonymization module, a data storage module and a data analysis module; extracting the license plate characters from the license plate data; packaging the license plate characters in license plate files; anonymizing the license plate files; storing, by the data storage module, the anonymized license plate files; analyzing the anonymized license plate file to identify a traffic condition; and outputting at least one command to at least one component of traffic management infrastructure, thereby causing the component to adjust an aspect of traffic management based upon the identified traffic condition.

Abstract: Examples include a system for controlling traffic signalling devices at an intersection, including a first radar sensor that detects road users in a first detection region on a first traffic route, outputting first radar sensor data indicating first sensor detected positions and a first sensor detected radial velocities, and a second radar sensor that detects road users in a second detection region on a second traffic route, outputting second sensor data indicating second sensor detected positions and a second sensor detected velocities. The first radar sensor and second radar sensor are at different locations, or different orientations, or both, and configured such that the first and second detection region have an overlap. An electronic data processing device combines the first radar sensor data and second radar sensor data into combination signals, and controls the traffic signalling devices based at least partially on the combination signals.

Abstract: In one example embodiment, a computer-implemented method for determining traffic conditions includes obtaining traffic sample data associated with a first direction of traffic on a first road segment, the traffic sample data including data indicative of a plurality of movement speeds associated with a plurality of objects. The method includes associating each of the plurality of average traffic speeds with at least one of a plurality of traffic types. The method includes determining map data based at least in part on the plurality of traffic types and associated average traffic speeds. The method includes transmitting to a client device in response to a request, map data corresponding to at least one of the plurality of traffic types.

Abstract: To reduce the effects of traffic jams, a traffic reduction system identifies road segments having more a threshold amount of traffic. The traffic reduction system also receives an indication of a current location of a client device operating in a vehicle and compares the current location to the locations of the identified road segments to determine whether the vehicle is on or approaching the road segment. If the vehicle is on or approaching the road segment, the traffic reduction system determines a target speed for the vehicle to maintain an equal distance between the vehicle and the vehicle in front of the vehicle and the vehicle and the vehicle behind the vehicle. The traffic reduction system then provides the target speed to the client device for display on a user interface. By maintaining equal distances between vehicles in front of and behind each other, the amount of traffic dissipates.

Abstract: A system and method for providing increased traffic carrying capacity of a road, such as a highway, by modifying an existing roadway from, for example, four lanes to five lanes, to create an additional travel lane. The system and method dynamically changes the width of travel lanes using, for example, embedded pavement lights, or other lighting arrangements, in lieu of traditional painted lane lines. As traffic volumes increase and speeds decrease along the road, an intelligent transport system (ITS) sends a congestion signal to the overhead lane controls and dynamic message signs (DMS) along the entire road segment of interest. The posted speed limits are changed, and the lane markings are controlled to dynamically increase the number of lanes in the road segment to five, for example, of narrower widths until traffic volumes reduce and the number of lanes can be returned to four, for example, with normal speed limits.
