摘要: The present disclosure is generally related to a tape head and a tape drive including a tape head. The tape head comprises one or more head assemblies, each head assembly comprising a plurality of write heads aligned in a row, at least one writer servo head aligned with the row of write heads, a plurality of read heads aligned in a row, and at least one reader servo head aligned with the row of read heads. The writer servo head and the reader servo head are independently controllable and are configured to operate concurrently. The tape head is able to accurately and independently position the write heads using the writer servo head(s) when writing data to a tape and position the read heads using the reader servo head(s) when reading data from the tape, even if the write heads and read heads are or become mis-aligned.

摘要: A data storage device is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a magnetic media, wherein the head comprises a write coil and a write pole. A test pattern is written to the magnetic media by applying a first current to the write coil. A second current is applied to the write coil while the head passes over the test pattern, wherein the second current has a polarity opposite the first current. After applying the second current to the write coil while the head passes over the test pattern, the test pattern is read from the magnetic media using the head to generate a first read signal, and a first noise power of the first read signal is measured. A degradation of the write pole is detected based on the first noise power measurement.

摘要: A data storage device is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk comprising a plurality of servo sectors defining a plurality of data tracks, wherein each servo sector comprises a track ID followed by a sync mark followed by at least one servo burst, and a first servo sector does not include a preamble. During a read operation, a servo gate is opened in order to read the track ID, the sync mark, and the servo burst of the first servo sector. During a write operation, the servo gate is opened in order to miss reading at least part of the track ID of the first servo sector so as to reduce a write gap preceding the first servo sector.
