A superconductive load bearing support without a mechanical contact and vibration damping for cryogenic instruments in space. The levitation support and vibration damping is accomplished by the use of superconducting magnets and the "Meissner" effect. The assembly allows for transfer of vibration energy away from the cryogenic instrument which then can be damped by the use of either an electronic circuit or conventional vibration damping apparatus.

The IDDA comprises: a cold finger base; an elongated Dewar envelope having a proximal end associated with the cold finger base and a distal end comprising an optical window; an elongated tubular cold finger located inside said elongated Dewar envelope and having a proximal end at the cold finger base and a distal end for carrying a detector so as to expose the detector to incoming radiation through said optical window; an internal front support member extending from an inner surface of the Dewar envelope at its distal end to the distal end of the cold finger; and at least one wideband dynamic vibration absorber assembly located outside the Dewar envelope and attached to at least one location on an exterior surface of the Dewar envelope, said dynamic vibration absorber thereby attenuating vibration of the cold finger and the detector.

An improved viscous dampening arrangement for a taut-band suspension system in an electrical indicating instrument includes a hub associated with the stator and a turret associated with the rotor. The hub and turret each have central openings for receiving the taut-band. The hub and turret are arranged, in use, in a spaced-apart facing relationship with the facing portions of hub and turret being tapered in a controlled fashion. A viscous dampening fluid is provided between the hub and turret and an anti-wetting agent is applied to the surfaces of the hub and turret where the dampening fluid is not desired. The geometry of the tapers is chosen so as to minimize the effects of longitudinal and radial shocks and vibrations on the electrical indicating instrument.
