    Abstract: Ions are separated according to their mass-to-charge ratios. A separation region receives the ions, extending in a first direction and a second direction that is different to the first direction. An electrode arrangement confines the ions in the separation region. The electrode arrangement is configured to apply a time-varying potential in the separation region to cause the ions to move in the first direction and configured to apply a potential gradient in the separation region, the potential gradient opposing the time-10 varying potential, such that the ions are separated at different positions in the first direction according to the mass-to-charge ratios of the ions. A force is applied in the second direction to the ions to cause the ions to move in the second direction.

    Abstract: Provided is a mass spectrometer including: an ion generation unit configured to provide an ion generation path; an ion selection unit configured to provide an ion selection path connected to the ion generation path; a reaction unit configured to provide a reaction path connected to the ion selection path; a second ion selection unit configured to provide a second ion selection path connected to the reaction path; and an ion detection unit coupled to the second ion selection unit. The ion selection path and the reaction path extend in a first direction, and the reaction unit includes: a reaction pipe extending in the first direction to define the reaction path; and a sample inflow pipe coupled to the reaction pipe. The sample inflow pipe provides a sample inflow path connected to the reaction path, and the sample inflow path includes an inclined path. The inclined path extends to form an acute angle (α) with respect to the first direction.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein are various methods and apparatus for performing charge detection mass spectrometry (CDMS). In particular, techniques are disclosed for monitoring a detector signal from a CDMS device to determine how many ions are present in the ion trap (10) of the CDMS device. For example, if no ions are present the measurement can then be terminated early. Similarly, if more than one ion is present, the measurement can be terminated early, or ions can be removed from the trap (10) until only a single ion remains. Techniques are also provided for increasing the probability of there being a single ion in the trap (10). A technique for attenuating an ion beam is also provided.

    Abstract: A sugar chain analysis method is a method for analyzing a sugar chain structure bound to an antibody, the method including: a releasing step of adding a sugar cleavage enzyme to a sample containing an antibody, so that a sugar chain bound to the antibody is specifically released to obtain a free sugar chain; a recovery step of recovering the free sugar chain by affinity purification; a hydrophobization step of hydrophobizing the free sugar chain to obtain a hydrophobized sugar chain; and a measurement step of performing supercritical liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry in this order on the hydrophobized sugar chain.

    Abstract: A method of operating a collision cell (10) in a mass spectrometer is disclosed. The collision cell comprises an entrance aperture (116), an exit aperture (117) and electrodes (113, 114) for producing electric fields. The method comprises feeding ions in a forward axial direction (LD) through the entrance aperture into the collision cell, producing a first electric field to trap ions, and subsequently producing a second electric field to accelerate trapped ions in the forward axial direction. The method further comprises producing a gas flow (G1) which is, at least at the entrance aperture (116) of the collision cell, contrary to the forward axial direction (LD), so as to reduce the kinetic energy of ions in dependence on their collisional cross sections. A collision cell arranged for carrying out the method is also disclosed, as well as a mass spectrometer comprising such a collision cell.

    Abstract: The invention relates to an electrostatic ion trap having a central axis and a central symmetrical plane perpendicular to the central axis. The electrostatic ion trap comprises an inner electrode group arranged along the central axis and a pair of outer electrode groups arranged on two sides of the central symmetry plane along the central axis. Each outer electrode group comprises a plurality of electrode plates.
