Abstract: A battery module is disclosed having a plurality of series-connected battery cells contained in, and electrically isolated from, an enclosure, with a first internal relay to control connection between cells and a positive terminal, and a second internal relay to control the connection between cells and a negative terminal. A control signal input is provided to control the relays. An embodiment is disclosed having an internal battery management system which controls the relays in response to a digital message. A modular battery pack is disclosed consisting of a plurality of modules connected in parallel, which can be individually and independently activated and deactivated. A method is provided for activating an individual module.

Abstract: Systems and methods for storing energy for use by an electric vehicle are disclosed. Systems can include an electric vehicle battery pack including a rack configured to couple a plurality of independently removable battery strings to the vehicle, the battery strings configured to be selectively coupled in parallel to a vehicle power bus. The battery strings may include a housing, a plurality of electrochemical cells disposed within the housing, a circuit for electrically connecting the electrochemical cells, a positive high-voltage connector, a negative high-voltage connector, a switch within the housing, and a string control unit configured to control the switch. Each battery string can include a coolant inlet and a coolant outlet configured to couple with and sealingly uncouple from an external coolant supply conduit and an external coolant return conduit, and an auxiliary connector configured to couple with an external communications system and/or an external low-voltage power supply.

Abstract: The disclosure provides a battery busbar including a conductive sheet, at least two bridge portions and at least two terminal contact portions. The conductive sheet has at least one cavity portion. Each of the at least two bridge portions has a first end and a second end which are opposite to each other, and the first ends of the bridge portions are respectively connected to different sides of the at least one cavity portion. The terminal contact portions are spaced apart from each other and are respectively connected to the second ends of the bridge portions. A width direction is defined to be substantially perpendicular to a line passing through the first end and the second end of one of the at least two bridge portions; along the width direction, a width of the bridge portion is smaller than a width of the terminal contact portion.

Abstract: Pouch-type battery cells include a first and second pouch layer, one or more electrode pairs between the two pouch layers, each pair including an anode and cathode current collector, a peripheral seal defined by a peripheral seal path and joining the two pouch layers to form a pouch encasing the one or more electrode pairs, an anode tab electrically coupled to one or more anode current collectors within the pouch and a cathode tab electrically coupled to one or more cathode current collectors within the pouch each extend outward from the peripheral seal. The anode and/or cathode tab include one or more apertures disposed along the peripheral seal path such that a portion of the peripheral seal is formed between the first and second pouch layers within the one or more apertures. The tabs of multiple battery cells can be electrically coupled via busbars to form a battery pack.

Abstract: Thin Film Batteries are made of battery layers. Each battery layer has a substrate with one or more battery structures on the substrate surface. The battery structures have a first electrode connection and a second electrode, a first electrode (e.g. a cathode or anode) is electrically connected to the first electrode connection and a second electrode (e.g. an anode or cathode) is electrically connected to the second electrode connection. An electrolyte is at least partial disposed between and electrically connected to the first and second electrodes. A first edge connection on one of the substrate edges is physically and electrically connected to the first electrode connection. A second edge connection on one of the substrate edges is physically and electrically connected to the second electrode connection. An electrically insulating lamination is disposed on the substrate and covers the components except for the first and second edge connections, connected to respective battery electrodes. A first stack external connection electrical connects two or more of the first edge connections and a second stack external connection electrical connects two or more of the second edge connections. A first and second battery pole are connected to the respective first and second stack external connections. The TFBs are hermetically sealed.
