Abstract: Disclosed is a carbon material, such as a carbon nanotube, into which a boron atom and/or a phosphorus atom is/are introduced while maintaining its characteristic structures and functions and a method for producing the same. The carbon material of the present invention is one in which a boron atom and/or a phosphorus atom is/are introduced into part of carbon atoms composing the carbon material, and can be produced by a method for producing a carbon material including the steps of: bringing a carbon material into contact with a fluorination treatment gas containing a fluorine-containing gas, thereby subjecting a surface of the carbon material to fluorination treatment; and bringing the carbon material after the fluorination treatment into contact with a boronization treatment gas containing a boron-containing gas, thereby subjecting to boronization treatment and/or into contact with a phosphorization treatment gas containing a phosphorus-containing gas, thereby subjecting to phosphorization treatment.

The printed battery includes an anode composed of a non-toxic biocompatible metal, a first carbon-based current collector in electrical contact with the anode, a three-dimensional hierarchical mesoporous carbon-based cathode, a second carbon-based current collector, and an electrolyte layer disposed between the anode and the cathode, the electrolyte layer configured to activate the printed battery when the electrolyte is released into one or both the anode and the cathode. The analyte sensor includes a sensing material and a reactive chemistry additive in the sensing material.

Abstract: The present invention is a surface-modified carbon material including chemical addends added to the surface of graphene, such that a one-dimensional periodicity corresponding to a large number of addition positions of the chemical addends can be observed in a Fourier-transformed image of a scanning probe microscopic image of the surface of graphene. The surface-modified carbon material of the present invention has a bandgap and therefore can be used as a sensor capable of electronically controlling an operation or another electronic device.

Abstract: Nanoporous carbon-based scaffolds or structures, and specifically carbon aerogels and their manufacture and use thereof. Embodiments include a cathode material within a lithium-air battery, where the cathode is formed of a binder-free, monolithic, polyimide-derived carbon aerogel. The carbon aerogel includes pores that improve the oxygen transport properties of electrolyte solution and improve the formation of lithium peroxide along the surface and/or within the pores of the carbon aerogel. The cathode and underlying carbon aerogel provide optimal properties for use within the lithium-air battery.
