A push-pull amplifier is connected by an input to the filter device. It comprises two feedback amplifier transistors connected in series, which are connected to a voltage output of the controllable voltage source for supply purposes. Control terminals of the amplifier transistors are connected to the input and, via a load, to an output of the push-pull amplifier.

A system is provided that intelligently compresses the amplitude modulation in a polar modulator so that it can be implemented with a single-stage variable gain amplifier. Limiting the amplitude modulation range on the low side prevents collapse of the transmit signal's time-varying envelope and eases circuit implementation. Limiting the amplitude modulation range on the high side reduces the peak-to-average ratio of the waveform and thereby improves the efficiency of the radio transmitter.

The present invention relates to a precision phase modulator wherein a carrier signal of constant amplitude and frequency and a modulating signal are applied to the two inputs of the first one of a cascade of linear suppressed-carrier amplitude modulators. Each subsequent modulator of the cascade arrangement concurrently modulates the output signal of the previous modulator of the cascade with the modulation signal. The input carrier signal and the output signal of each modulator of the cascade is tapped-off and weighted, the weighted carrier input and outputs of the even-numbered modulators and the weighted outputs of the odd-numbered modulators are separately added and are combined in quadrature to provide a phase modulated output signal.

In addition, a preselected amount of in-phase carrier is added to the quadrature carrier normally added to the output of the suppressed-carrier modulator forming a part of each Armstrong modulator, the carriers being added to each modulator output, however, differing in phase from quadrature by equal and opposite amounts. By properly preselecting the amount of phase difference from quadrature of the added carriers, third-order nonlinearities can also be substantially eliminated after combining the outputs of the Armstrong modulators in a multiplier circuit.

An amplified polar modulated output signal is generated in accordance with the phase modulation and amplitude modulation components by using a differential power amplifier circuitry(30) and supplying an amplified phase modulation component to a differential input of the differential power amplifier circuitry(30).
