Abstract: Systems and methods to enhance the removal of inorganic contaminants, including metals, from hydrocarbon feedstocks at a refinery. One or more embodiments of such systems and methods may be used to provide a renewable hydrocarbon feedstock having a reduced amount of metal contaminants. The reduction of metal contaminants in the renewable hydrocarbon feedstock mitigates catalyst fouling and/or deactivation during downstream refinery processing of the renewable hydrocarbon feedstock.

Abstract: A process for pyrolysis of a mixed plastic stream that contains polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is provided in which the chloride from PVC is removed from an initial melting reactor that heats the mixed plastic stream to a sufficient temperature to produce HCl but at a low enough temperature to avoid production of organochlorides. Chloride is primarily removed in a vapor stream from the initial melting reactor, while additional chloride removal may be removed downstream from the melting reactor by the use of sorbent addition to the pyrolysis reactor and by subsequent adsorbent beds.

Abstract: The invention provides methods for treating a source oil phase consisting of heavy oil, bitumen, a mixture of heavy oil and bitumen, a mixture of solvent and heavy oil or bitumen or both. The method comprises: introducing the source oil phase to a heated lower section of a device to provide an interior source oil phase; heating the interior source oil phase so as to thermally separate a light oil phase component therefrom and provide a vaporized light oil; and condensing the vaporized light oil phase on one or more internal cooling fins housed within the upper section of the device, to provide a condensed light oil phase liquid, wherein the internal cooling fins are angled so as to direct the condensed light oil phase liquid downwardly to a light end collection system.

Abstract: Process and apparatus for recovering a product stream from a waste plastic feedstock and reducing the endpoint of the product stream is provided. A polymer oil is produced as a product stream by pyrolyzing the waste plastic feedstock in a pyrolysis reactor to produce a pyrolysis reactor effluent and passing the reactor effluent stream to a contact condensing column. In the contact condensing column, the pyrolysis reactor effluent stream is separated into a vapor product stream and a liquid product stream. The vapor product stream is recovered from the condensing column and the liquid product stream is passed back to the pyrolysis reactor for further reduction.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for processing hydrocarbon and other feedstocks that contain lighter volatile component(s) along with heavier volatile or non-volatile component(s) and/or contaminant(s). The principal benefit being that a feedstock can be processed and separated into its distinct volatile components down to elemental and/or molecular levels, including the ability to handle the heaviest tars and bitumen within the system. This effectively provides onsite value add to the feedstock resource (minus the waste streams such as water, sulfur, or sand; which may have value as isolated components in their own right). The system is robust and can include innovative hardware, methods, and/or software. The system can isolate water, chemical, various hydrocarbon, and particle contaminants of arbitrary concentrations and sizes. These factors provide for significant increases in processing efficiencies and capabilities in the fields of refining and environmental recovery. In a variety of operating scenarios, near-zero emissions can be achieved while processing.
