Abstract: A method of making a sized and resin-coated fiber tow for use in a fiber reinforced composite. the method comprising the steps of providing a fiber, contacting at least a portion of the fiber with a sizing slurry to form a sized and resin-coated fiber, the sizing slurry comprising 0.1-25% by weight of a sizing agent and 20-80% by weight of a matrix-resin powder in a solvent, based on the total weight of the sizing slurry. wherein the total solid content, including the sizing agent and the matrix-resin powder, of the sizing slurry is greater than 30 wt. %. The method further comprising drying the sized and resin-coated fiber at a temperature below the melting point of the matrix-resin powder, thereby forming a dried sized and resin-coated fiber and winding the dried sized and resin-coated fiber onto a spool.

Abstract: Various implementations of yarns and multi-component filaments having a plurality of solid particles dispersed throughout a portion of the filaments are described herein. Inclusion of solid particles through a portion of the filaments allows for differing certain properties in products formed from the filaments while maintaining desirable physical properties such as strength or abrasion resistance. For example, including translucent or transparent particles, such as glass flakes or mica, may differ the visual properties, such as providing an increased luster. And, in other implementations, opaque solid particles may be included through a portion of the filaments to create a different property for a product formed with the filament.

Abstract: A method of creating a soft and lofty continuous fiber nonwoven web is provided. The method includes providing a first molten polymer and a second, different molten polymer to a spinneret defining a plurality of orifices and flowing a fluid intermediate the spinneret and a moving porous member. The method includes using the fluid to draw the first and second molten polymer components, in a direction toward the moving porous member, through at least some of the plurality of orifices to form a plurality of individual continuous fiber strands. The method includes depositing the continuous fiber strands onto the moving porous member at a first location to produce an intermediate continuous fiber nonwoven web, and intermittently varying a vacuum force applied to the moving porous member and to the intermediate web downstream of the first location and without the addition of more continuous fibers and without any heat applied.

Abstract: Multi-functional electronic textiles employing nanocomposite pattern elements and related methods are provided. An exemplary method for producing a textile product with an integrated electrical device includes applying conductive nanowires to a substrate to form a conductive nanowire network on the substrate and applying a thermoplastic elastomer to the nanowire network to form a nanocomposite layer on top of the substrate. The method also includes cutting the nanocomposite layer into a desired pattern to form an electrical device and transferring the electrical device from the substrate onto a textile fabric.

Abstract: A thermoplastic filament comprising multiple polymers of differing flow temperatures in a regular geometric arrangement, and a method for producing such a filament, are described. Because of the difference in flow temperatures, there exists a temperature range at which one polymer is mechanically stable while the other is flowable. This property is extremely useful for creating thermoplastic monofilament feedstock for three-dimensionally printed parts, wherein the mechanically stable polymer enables geometric stability while the flowable polymer can fill gaps and provide strong bonding and homogenization between deposited material lines and layers. These multimaterial filaments can be produced via thermal drawing from a thermoplastic preform, which itself can be three-dimensionally printed. Furthermore, the preform can be printed with precisely controlled and complex geometries, enabling the creation of monofilament and fiber with unique decorative or functional properties.
