As a result, a used paper recycling apparatus of small size and simple structure is realized.

A drying section for a paper making machine includes a larger number of dryer sections, fewer dryers in each dryer section, and provisions for driving many of the dryers individually. The average number of dryers per dryer section is less than five and preferably less than four. By providing a small number of dryers per dryer section and driving many of the dryers individually, it is possible to more precisely compensate for stretching of the paper web in the initial stages of the drying process and to more precisely compensate for shrinkage of the paper web during the latter stages of the drying process.

A process for drying a paper web and a drying section of a paper making machine. The drying section includes at least one drying group comprised of a plurality of drying cylinders, each at least partially wrapped by a web to be dried. The drying cylinders having peripheral surfaces heated for drying the web moving therepast. The peripheral surfaces of the drying cylinders in the drying groups are rotated at the velocity of the web along the web path. At least one of the drying cylinders in at least one drying group is driven to rotate at a speed that is different than the speed of the web moving past the at least one cylinder. The at least one cylinder may be selectively driven to rotate faster or slower than the speed of the web moving therepast, which applies more heat to the paper web. The invention is adaptable for a single tier drying section and/or for a double tier drying sections or for other drying section arrangements. The operation of a drying cylinder at a different speed than the other cylinders is useful for one or more than one drying cylinder in a drying group and where a drying section is comprised of more than one drying group, is useful for a drying cylinder in one or more of the drying groups.

A journal of a drying cylinder or the like, in a paper, cardboard or coating machine, is mounted in a bearing housing which is supported in fixed position on a frame. A hollow, cylindrically widened housing for an electric drive motor is formed as an extension of the bearing housing toward the drying cylinder. This motor housing, together with the bearing housing, forms a continuous outer surface for the drive system. The motor is a permanent-magnet motor whose stator has electromagnet poles which are arranged in the hollow cylindrical housing. Its rotor has permanent-magnet poles, which form a hollow cylindrical ring mounted on the circumference of the journal. The drive system consists of only a few parts, requires only a small amount of space for installation, and is easily and inexpensively serviceable.

The drying cylinders of a paper machine drying cylinder block are provided with a joint driving system in which the pin of almost every drying cylinder is connected to a pin gear type reduction gear having a primary shaft positively connected to a drive shaft which is perpendicular to the cylinder pins and through a cone gear pair at one end of the primary shaft. In order to eliminate blind moments in the cylinder block there is provided an overload clutch in the form of a first flange fixed near the one end of the primary shaft, a second flange attached axially slidable at the one end of the primary shaft to define an annular recess with the first flange for receiving one cone gear of the cone gear pair, and means for pressing the one cone gear between the first and second flanges.
