In an embodiment, the flange apparatus includes a flange and a flexible sleeve disposed through a central opening of the flange, in which a first portion of the flexible sleeve is seated on the flange. The flange further includes arm portions, each having an aperture defined therethrough. The surfaces of the apertures are substantially smooth, and the apertures are operable to receive fasteners. In an embodiment, the arm portions may be made of threadable materials, and the fasteners may have thread-forming fasteners such that threads are formed in the arm portions when the thread-forming fastener is received in the aperture of the arm portions.

A grooved-ended resilient expansion joint is disclosed. The expansion joint has a resilient expansion member with a central resilient portion and two resilient axially disposed cylindrical ends. Each cylindrical end has a radially outwardly raised distal cylindrical gasket portion with at least one inside shoulder having an inner diameter sized substantially the same as an outer diameter of a pipe to be joined. Each cylindrical end also has a neck portion between the central portion and the gasket portion that is sized to receive a grooved-ended pipe nipple.

The flexible coupling is self-cleaning and acts as a vibration dampener. A tubular expansion joint member, formed of rubber-impregnated fabric plies 16a, 16b and having end flanges 10 joined by cylindrical portions 14 to an annular arched portion 12, incorporates reinforcing rings 22 embedded in said cylindrical portions, each of said rings being formed by a tight winding of glass tape, cord, roving or other elongate glass material. As shown, the rings, preferably of rectangular cross-section, are formed by a spirally-wound glass tape, which is coated with unifying adhesive such as an elastomer, epoxy or polyester cement, and are interspaced by annular blocks 24 of solid rubber or blocks of spirally-wound rubber-impregnated fabric tape. Said blocks oppose axial movement of the rings when the joint is under pressure in use. In modified embodiments, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the reinforcing rings are formed by a winding of adhesive-impregnated or coated glass cord, yarn or roving. In the latter embodiment, only one ring is incorporated either side of the arched portion and each ring is of tapered cross-section. In both the embodiments of Figs. 3 and 4, the innermost corners 26a or 30a of the rings are rounded. In a final embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), a single ring 38 of spirally wound broad glass tape extends each side of the arched portion substantially the length of the cylindrical portions 14. The expansion joint member is made by building up the different layers on a rotating, shaped mandrel, the rubber thereafter being cured.

The invention is directed to a flexible pipe connecting unit which includes a part made of elastic workable material. The pipe connecting unit includes a wave-shaped or hose-shaped bellows (4) made of elastomeric material. The bellows (4) has respective projecting flange collars (14; 14 a, 14b) at its respective ends. The flange collars (14; 14a, 14b) preferably are provided with a reinforcement insert (16; 16a, 16b) and annularly-shaped pipe connecting pieces (flanges 18; 18a, 16b) are disposed behind corresponding ones of the flange collars. The pipe connecting unit (2) coacts directly with weld-on flanges as counter flanges (20; 20a, 20b) without additional seals or corresponding joining locations. For this purpose, the end sealing faces of the flange collars (14; 14a, 14b) are partitioned in the radial direction by a peripherally extending slot (28; 28a, 28b). In this way, at least two coaxial concentric annularly-shaped sealing surfaces (14-I, 14-II) are formed. With outer weld-on or slip-on flanges (20; 20a, 20b), only corresponding ones of the outer annular sealing Surfaces (14-I) are in contact engagement and, when the counter flange (20; 20a, 20b) is a welding-neck flange, at least the outer sealing annular surface (14-I) comes into contact engagement. An internal flexible dust seal for connecting and accomodating misalignment, expansion, contraction, and torsion between openings of adjacent ducts carrying dust and particulate laden hot gases. The internal flexible dust seal can undergo lateral, axial, angular, and torsional movements while at the same time keeping any particulate matter or dust from leaving the duct and/or entering the space between liner plates and the insulation cavity of an outer gas flexible seal or expansion joint. The internal flexible dust seal is fixed to the inside of the duct.
