摘要: Hot surface igniter assemblies used in cooktops are shown and described. The hot surface igniters include a silicon nitride ceramic body with an embedded, resistive, heat-generating circuit. The igniters are less than 0.04 inches thick, and when energized, they reach surface temperatures in excess of 2000° F. in under 4 seconds to ignite combustible gas such as propane, butane, or natural gas. Examples of cook top burner systems are also provided which allow the igniter to remain on after ignition at a power level that is lower than during ignition but high enough to ignite the cooking gas should a flame out occur. Examples are also provided of burners that ignite on a low flow setting (e.g., simmer) as opposed the high flow settings that are common in cook top industry.

To prevent damage to the igniter during use or cleaning, an insulator assembly is provided which protects the distal end of the igniter ceramic body from damage while still exposing it to the cooking gas flow from the burner. In addition, a number of different terminal connection schemes for connecting the igniters to a power source are shown and described.

摘要: A hot wire igniter for igniting a gas appliance is disclosed. The coil of the hot wire igniter is formed from a thin high temperature, iron, chromium, aluminum alloy having a center section that is tightly wound. Alternatively, the coil can be formed from an alloy of platinum and iridium, or a similar high temperature metal alloy. The coil turns initially do not touch one another and each end of the coil is welded to a lead-in rod that is received within an insulator member. The lead-in rods are connected to a power source. The coil portion of the hot wire igniter is received within a gas collector box which is attached to the burner to be ignited. Application of the voltage source to the lead-in rods causes the coil of wire to reach a temperature in excess of the ignition temperature of the gas-air mixture which surrounds same causing the ignition of the mixture.

摘要: A tube for interconnecting combustors (11, 12) in a gas turbine combustion system for ignition purposes. The tube comprises three elements: two outer tube sections (15, 17) connected to respective combustors (11, 12) and an inner tube section (16) coupling the two outer sections (15, 17). The ends (20) of the inner tube section (16) protrude somewhat into the outer sections so that air inlet through holes (19) in the outer sections in the vicinity of the two couplings produces cooling air flow (14) adjacent the inner surface of the tube in opposite directions. The bi-directional nature of the air flow (14) substantially prevents any mechanism by which hot combustion gases (10) are carried between the two combustors by the cooling air, thus providing effective tube cooling and prolonging the life of the tube.

摘要: A single device for proving both the presence of an igniter and flame in a fuel burner is provided, the device including means such as a ceramic coating for both transmitting actinic radiation emitted by the igniter and generating actinic radiation upon flame excitation. The ceramic or other means is associated with an actinic radiation transmitting element which delivers the radiation to a photoresponsive element whereby a signal is provided which triggers fuel delivery to the burner when the igniter is an igniting mode or thereafter when flame is present. A method of proving igniter and flame is also provided utilizing such device and electronic circuitry adapted to prove its own integrity.

摘要: A heat-resistant ceramic electric igniter element has a plurality of compositions in a continuous unitary body structure including a central or igniting zone of a composition having a relatively high electrical resistance flanked by end zones of a composition having a lower electrical resistance to which the leads are attached. Gradual transitions from one composition to the other are provided which compensate for any differences in the coefficient of expansion between the two compositions and minimize migration between the two compositions.
