摘要:
Apparatus for converting a train of code signals representative of a letter, number, or symbol to a visual display of such corresponding letter, number, or symbol. The train of signals includes individual signals of at least two distinct time durations, the length of the time durations being dependent upon the proficiency of the operator initiating the signals. In the signal converting apparatus, a clock signal of a preselected time duration is produced. The time relation of each of the signals in the train of signals is resolved in relation to the clock signal. A first signal is produced if the signal being resolved is less than the clock signal, and a second signal is produced if the signal being resolved is greater than the clock signal. An addressor receives the first and second signals and stores the signals to generate a given address dependent upon the particular first and second signals and the order those signals are received. The addressor produces a signal indicative of the given address. A memory contains a respective letter, number, or symbol corresponding to each address. The memory is associated with the addressor for receiving the signal of the given address and producing a signal representative of such respective letter, number, or symbol of the address. A sensor detects the end of the train of signals and produces a signal indicative of the end of the train of signals. A visual display is associated with the memory and the sensor such that the visual display receives signals indicative of the respective letter, number, or symbol of the given address and produces a visual display of the respective letter, number, or symbol when the end of the train of signals is sensed.

Electronic signals, e.g., in the form of light beams, are produced. These are sequenced or commutated and transmitted through optical fibers arranged singly, in groups, or in systems of sub-groups. Means are provided to scan, select and transmit illumination, selective data, or analogous bits or continua of energy. Control means include a reversible motor driving commutator elements which are geared and grouped together. These serve to connect selected light fibers, singly or in groups, to a light source and/or to a light sensor, for reading data cards, for scanning areas or objects systematically, including anatomical organs or parts, or for displaying information, guiding human or mechanical operators in selection and/or placement for assembly of small mechanical parts, and analogous functions.

Code signals, such as alpha-numeric elements of the Morse International Code, are produced by rotating a disc member selected from a set bearing character elements represented by perforations in or printed circuit components on the disc. These signal components are sensed by detector means, electronic or mechanical, which are connected to an oscillator or equivalent tone generator and to a suitable amplifier or transmitter. Each separate disc bears a group of annularly spaced characters encoded for detection; a small group of discs thus contains the full code alphabet, including numerical and punctuation characters.

Signals, such as elements of the Morse code, are produced by projecting a stream of energy, such as a small gas stream or light beam, against the normally obstructing annular zone of a rotating disc provided with apertures which allow the energy to pass through in a controlled pattern. Means mounting the input stream and the transmitter in axial alignment are mounted for selective shifting to other annuli of the disc; in this way a disc can carry a series of different signals. The transmitter may be a simple transducer, such as an air activated pipe, or whistle, or it may be a light conduit leading to a photosensitive transducer. The tone produced stimulates closely the commercial radio and wireless signals and facilitates teaching the code by means of aural rather than visual images.

A device for teaching Morse code comprising four flat members in superposition. These four members comprise a base member imprinted with alphamerics except ETANIM, a first central member slidably mounted on the base member having a series of windows for viewing a selected group of alphamerics from among those imprinted on the base member, a second central member slidably mounted on the first central member having a window positioned at right angles to the series of windows on the first central member, and a top member mounted on the second central member and affixed to the base member. The window of the second central member permits viewing a single indicium from among the selected group of alphamerics viewed through the series of windows in the first central member. The top member has a window for viewing the single indicium observable through the window in the second central member. The top member has imprinted thereon the letters ETANIM, and the positive integers if desired, and has two sets of Morse indicia corresponding to these alphamerics. Means are provided for sliding the first and second central members relative to the top and bottom members. The alphameric indicia on the base member are positioned such that the sum of any Morse indicium selected from each of the two sets of Morse indicia by movement of indicating means associated with the central members will cause display of an alphameric corresponding to the sum in the window of the second central member.
