Abstract:
A method and system is provided for distributing media such as optical discs. In one example, a set of discs is provided, with at least one of the discs being unreadable in an associated disc player. In this way, a consumer may use and enjoy any readable disc, but must take additional steps to activate the unreadable disc. When the consumer desires to activate the disc, the unreadable disc is placed near an activation device. The activation device uses and RF communication to read an ID from the unreadable disc. The activation device retrieves authorization data and confirms that the disc is in condition for activation. Provided that the disc is authorized for activation, the authorization data is transmitted to the disc using the RF communication. The disc has logic to confirm and complete the activation process, and may switch an optical shutter to activate the disc by making its content readable in the associated disc player. By distributing unreadable discs that can be activated only under defined requirements, content owners are able to freely distribute discs, while maintaining control of their content. For example, a consumer may be provided a library of unreadable discs, and, after approval by to the content owner, the consumer can activate selected discs.
Abstract:
An RFID system for providing data and power is provided. The RFID system has a target that is configured to receive RF signals on multiple frequencies, and a corresponding multi-frequency scanner. The RF scanner is configured to transmit an RF signal to the target and, in response, receive an ID message from the target. Depending on the particular application, the scanner may use one or both frequencies to communicate with the target In some applications, the target may include a switch that may be set to enable the target to have a defined level of utility. The target may receive, on one of the frequencies, sufficient or supplemental power to change the state of the switch. Accordingly, the RFID system uses the second frequency to supplement power transmission to the target In other cases, the RFID system may use the second frequency to enhance data communication with the target.
Abstract:
A printer cartridge is provided that operates only after an authorized point of sale event. The printer cartridge may be an ink jet cartridge or a toner cartridge. The ink jet cartridge has a set of inkjets and driver lines for expelling ink from the inkjets. The cartridge also has an RF antenna connected to an RF accessible integrated circuit. The RF accessible integrated circuit connects to a switch in the ink jet cartridge. The state of the switch determines the operational characteristics for the ink jet cartridge. For example, a manufacturer may set the switch to a first state which disables or limits the operation of the ink jet cartridge. Upon activation using an RF scanning system, the RF integrated circuit sets the switch to a second state, which enables the ink jet cartridge to have full commercial functionality. In this way, the ink jet cartridge may be moved through the distribution chain with a substantially reduced threat of theft. After a sensor has measure or calculated that the cartridge has met its useful life, the RF integrated circuit sets the switch to disable the cartridge.
Abstract:
A radio frequency controller device enables the utility of a target to be controlled using an RF communication. The radio frequency controller device has a switch that is set to a defined state responsive to the RF communication. More particularly, conditional logic circuitry uses the RF communication to determine if the target's utility should be changed, and sets the state of the switch accordingly. The radio frequency controller device also has a target interface that allows the target to determine the state of the switch, and based on the state of the switch, a different utility will be available for the target. The radio frequency controller device also has an antenna for the RF communication, as well as a demodulator/modulator circuit. When used to control the utility of an electrical or electronic device, the radio frequency controller device has a low-power circuit portion that is used to set the state of the switch responsive to the RF communication, and also has a full power circuit portion that communicates with the target. In this way, the state of the switch may be set when the target is in a power-off condition, and the target is able to determine the state of the switch when the target is activated.
