Abstract: A method for producing asphalt fibers (26) includes supplying molten asphalt (20) to a rotating asphalt spinner (10), centrifuging asphalt fibers (22) from the asphalt spinner (10), and collecting the asphalt fibers (26). The molten asphalt (20) is supplied to the asphalt spinner (10) at a temperature within the range of from about 270 DEG F (132 DEG C) to about 500 DEG F (260 DEG C). Also disclosed is a method for integrating asphalt with reinforcement fibers including the steps of establishing a downwardly moving veil of reinforcement fibers, such as glass fibers, and centrifuging asphalt fibers from a rotating asphalt spinner positioned within the veil of reinforcement fibers to integrate the asphalt with the reinforcement fibers. A method for making an asphalt roofing shingle includes the steps of assembling together a mat of asphalt fibers with a mat of reinforcement fibers, coating the assembled mats to form an asphalt-coated sheet, applying granules to the asphalt-coated sheet, and cutting the asphalt-coated sheet into roofing shingles. The invention also includes the asphalt roofing shingle made by this process. Further, the invention includes asphalt highway reinforcement products containing fibers, and the method of making such products.

Abstract: Numerous alternative methods of producing product definition in such thick, binderless wool packs (48) of long, single component, and particularly, bicomponent, glass fibers (16) are provided. The present methods are loosely grouped as those including a step which disturbs the fiber matrix, those including a step which adds an element to the fiber matrix, and those including a step of fusing fibers. The latter group of methods includes laser (94) and hot needle (90) fusing of fibers, while others include the addition of polymer fibers (96) and polymer material to long fibers (16) generally uniformly distributed in a binderless wool pack (48).

Abstract: Apparatus for making dual-component fibers is provided and includes a spinner having a peripheral wall. The spinner includes orifices located on the peripheral wall thereof for centrifuging the dual-component fibers, with the spinner being divided into a series of generally vertically aligned compartments by baffles positioned circumferentially around the interior of the peripheral wall. First and second molten thermoplastic materials are supplied to the spinner and directed into alternate ones of the compartments so that adjacent compartments contain different thermoplastic materials. Passages are located in each of the compartments through which the respective molten thermoplastic materials flow to the orifices on the peripheral wall of the spinner. The passages in adjacent ones of the compartments communicate with one another and with the orifices to joint the first and second molten thermoplastic materials together into dual-component fibers.

Abstract: This disclosure depicts a feeder or bushing (11) where the heat transfer members or fin shields (22) have outwardly disposed surfaces with a ceramic coating (30) bonded to those surfaces. The heat transfer surfaces also are in direct contact with and adjacent to the discharge wall of the feeder (11) where they act as support members to support the discharge wall. This combination is especially useful in designing feeders or bushings (11) with a greater number of orifices (14).
