Abstract: Disclosed is a device and method for finding the sync pattern in a fixed-length packetized bitstream (e.g. an MPEG2 transport stream). The device comprises means for accumulating a histogram of occurences of the sync pattern, and identifies the start of a packet depending on said histogram. An embodiment comprises a match table which is addressed by modulo-K counter (K is number of bytes in packet). Upon receiving a sync pattern, the corresponding table entry is incremented, otherwise the entry is set to zero or remains unaffected (faster embodiment). As soon as a table entry acquires a predetermined number N, a packet start signal is issued.
