Abstract: Switchable light modulators, which may be films, including chambers filled with electro-optic media, such as electrophoretic media, wherein some chambers have a different volume of electro-optic media such that when the electro-optic media is switched between an "open" and "closed" state some regions of the light modulator having chambers of greater volume undergo a greater change in optical density than areas having chambers with smaller volumes. Such switchable light modulators are useful for incorporation into windshields, glasses, windows, lenses, or visors where it is desirable that only part of the viewing area is darkened. Because the design only requires two (typically light-transmissive) electrodes, operation is simplified and costs are reduced, as compared to individually-actuable pixel electrodes.

Abstract: An electronic display device and a birefringent element are obtained. The electronic display device has liquid crystal material deployed between two transparent electrodes. The electronic display device and the birefringent element each have respective polarization axes. The electronic display device and the birefringent element are deployed relative to each other such that the polarization axes of the electronic display device are rotationally offset from the polarization axes of the birefringent element by an offset amount in accordance with a predetermined direction of rotation. A compensation voltage that is proportional to the offset amount is determined. The compensation voltage is applied across the transparent electrodes to induce the liquid crystal material to assume an intermediate state. The electronic display device produces polarized image light waves having polarization in a polarization direction in accordance with the intermediate state assumed by the liquid crystal material and that compensates for the rotational offset.

Further aspects of the invention relate to the use of the switchable window element as window for a building or a vehicle.

Abstract: A display comprises a polarised output spatial light modulator, switchable liquid crystal retarder, absorbing polariser and touch panel electrodes. The switchable liquid crystal layer is stabilised by a cured reactive mesogen material during application of an applied voltage. Light scatter in privacy mode is reduced and visual security level enhanced. Visibility of disclinations during application of applied pressure, for example from a finger on a touch screen is minimised.
