Abstract:
Techniques for detecting contraband are described, as are techniques for generating an image of living tissue. A location of interest relative to a target space is received, and a radar signal is transmitted in the direction of the location of interest. Portions of the radar signal are detected with multiple receiving structures. The detected portions are processed to generate information corresponding to dielectric or loss properties, the properties corresponding to particular positions within the target space. A determination is made as to whether contraband is present in the target space based on the determined properties.
Abstract:
Energy released from energized particles is sensed. Whether the energized particles include a possible energetic material is determined based on the sensed energy. If a determination is made that the energized materials include a possible energetic material, a spectral signature of the sensed energy is determined. The spectral signature of the sensed energy is compared to one or more known spectral signatures associated with energetic materials. Whether the possible energetic material is an actual energetic material is determined based on the comparison.
Abstract:
An input circuit of a microwave amplification tube achieves improved instantaneous bandwidth. By directly coupling the transmission line carrying a modulating radio frequency signal to a control grid, a low-Q input circuit is created that increases the fractional bandwidth of the system. A resonant cavity may be used to generate a voltage across the gap between the cathode and the control grid. Alternative geometries are presented whereby the electron beam is emitted from a cathode connected either to the center conductor of the transmission line or to the outer conductor of the transmission line. Alternatively, the electric field of the radio-frequency signal propagating through the transmission line may be used to create a voltage across the gap between the cathode and the control grid without using a resonant cavity. Likewise, alternative geometries are presented by which the electron beam is emitted from a cathode connected either to the center conductor or to the outer conductor of the transmission line.

A surveillance system is disclosed. In some embodiments, the surveillance system may include a controller configured to receive information data from an upstream information source and to control operation of a downstream information source based on the information data. In some embodiments, the system may include a first screening apparatus adapted to screen a subject in a subject position, a second screening apparatus adapted to screen the subject in the subject position, and a controller adapted to produce first and second screening data from the first and second screening apparatus, relate the screening data, and produce relational information data from the related screening data. A surveillance method also is disclosed. In some embodiments, the method may include analyzing screening data, obtaining information data, and reanalyzing the screening data based on the obtained information data. In some embodiments, the method may include associating, with respective identifiers, a person and carried items.

In one aspect, an x-ray scanning device is provided. The x-ray scanning device comprises a target adapted to convert electron-beam (e-beam) energy into x-ray energy, a detector array positioned to detect at least some x-rays emitted from the target, and a conveyer mechanism adapted to convey items to be inspected through an inspection region formed by the target and the detector array, wherein the target and the detector array are rotated out of alignment with each other such that x-rays emitted from the target impinge on diametrically positioned detectors of the detector array without passing through near-side detectors of the detector array.
Abstract:
An angular analysis system that can be controlled to receive radiation at a defined angle from a defined focus region. The angular analysis system is used for level 2 inspection in an explosive detection system. Level 2 inspection is provided by a three- dimensional inspection system that identifies suspicious regions of items under inspection. The angular analysis system is focused to gather radiation scattered at defined angles from the suspicious regions. Focusing may be achieved in multiple dimensions by movement of source and detector assemblies in a plane parallel to a plane holding the item under inspection. Focusing is achieved by independent motion of the source and detector assemblies. This focusing arrangement provides a compact device, providing simple, low cost and accurate operation.

An inspection system and methods for inspecting items using terahertz radiation that may be used to detect contraband (e.g., explosives, weapons and drugs) within items under inspection. Terahertz radiation may be transmitted through and/or reflected from an item. The density and/or a physical property of one or more regions within an item may be determined. Terahertz radiation may be used to inspect surface regions of an item and/or other regions of an item. Terahertz radiation may used in combination with and/or in addition to another inspection modality.

An improved interconnection protocol that is well suited for use in an inspection system or similar modular electronic system. Communication is provided over a network where the electronic modules are nodes, including a root node and multiple remote nodes. The root node and remote nodes are connected through multiple point-to-point synchronous links. The root node and remote nodes are configured to send and receive packets in either a short form or a normal form. Timing between the root node and remote nodes is provided by an external clock distributed by the root node. Each remote node responds to commands with low latency. This protocol allows normal packets to be configured to provide variable payload length, with a maximum payload size that yields a low protocol overhead.
Abstract:
A high power switchable power combiner includes a plurality of input ports and a plurality of matching elements. The matching elements are arranged to be used in combination when more than two of the input ports are connected. A thermally conductive dielectric member may be provided between the inner conductor of the combiner and the conductive housing thereof to provide a thermal path to dissipate heat from the center conductor.
